I don't know enough about the breeding of reptiles to know what the past has held, but from a ginetic point of view, if you have the same gene pool from both sides, it means that the bad parts of the pool that would normally get bred out, remain, as both parents carry the gene. The same can be said about the good parts of the gene pool too though.
