RE: substrate

i use newspaper under the astroturf and replace that a fair bit. that absorbs any moisture build up under the carpet like you were saying fuscus. Another good thing about astroturf is it helps the snakes shed.... mine just start their head on a log then go nuts across the astroturf to get the rest of the shed off.
