Hi All my name is Bec.

For 5.5yrs now I have been running my own dog rescue and rehoming service. Along with my little Maltese ShihTzu, Gizmo, I am also the proud owner of some gorgeous pythons and lizards, and a couple of cats. Animals have always been a passion of mine and I once had a wonderful dream of becoming a vet so as to be able to further help and save the wonderful creatures we are surrounded by.

Through high school, every class I did was aimed in the direction of being able to study further in the area of Veterinary. Unfortunately for me this dream was shattered when towards the end of year 11 (before my major exams) I had to undergo major spinal surgery. This in turn landed me almost 8mths behind in all my subjects as well as a very near fail of my Yr 11 exams. I tried my very hardest to catch up and to regain my grades but mediacally and emotionally I was unable to do so. Hence I gave up my dream of becoming a vet. Not without a huge battle of will and determination though. My mum was unlucky enough to be the one who helped me through the heartache of a shattered dream, and all those years of hard work.
That was 7.5yrs ago now.

Recently, the absolute opportunity of a lifetime found me!! One of my wonderful vet clinics, that aids me with my rehoming service, has somehow managed to reopen the dorr that slammed shut in my face so long ago.
I have been offered a position within a Cert IV in Veterinary Nursing!! My dream has been reborn. However, we all know that these things never come without consequence. It is now that I ask everyone for any help or advice, any at all, that is on offer.

The Problem :

-> The course commences in start July.
-> 4 weeks into the course a payment of $3,500 is required, which I don't have.
-> Every Thursday for the duration of the course is COMPULSORY
-> To take every Thursday off means I am no longer able to keep my job as they will not allow for that one day off per week. (even though I work 5-6days, 10-11hrs perday) a little selfish if you ask me.
-> Finding part time work will not be an issue BUT.....
-> Will not qualify for bank loan to pay for course

So I am gridlocked!! I have the one and only last chance to forfill my dream. Hoping one day to specialise in reptiles of course. I am hoping that someone out there may have some advice or be able to offer help of any sort.

Thankyou all for taking the time to read and hope to hear a few good suggestions soon. My enrolment is this Friday coming, it was confirmed today, so I have to think and act extremely fast.

Cheers all
Bec

If you can get someone else to guarantee your loan then you will get the money you need, perhaps your parents could help you with this?

Just check that this cert will give youthe pre-reqs to continue your study into vet science cause it would be a shame to do all this work just to go nowhere.

I would be going for the loan ASAP while you still have your job. They don't need to know that your going to quit. Make payments over a longer term so your not stuck with repayments you can afford.

You don't need to do a cert to be a vet nurse... heaps of my class mates work as vet nurses without any qualification about from that they are veterinary students. Their work colleagues generally haven't done anything specific either, just got a job at a vet and learned on the job.

I'm not saying this to discourage you, because good on you for going for it, but just in case it doesn't work out I don't want you to think you'll never be able to work in the industry, and I'm letting you know it certainly isn't your "one and only chance".. there's always a way. And it is true that certified nurses will generally get to help with the cooler stuff quicker and they can do radiographs etc.

PM sent, as well.

Exactly. All you need is some form of income and they'll approve you, if that doesn't work get a guarantor.

Also, NAB student loans are pretty good, low interest rates and you con borrow anywhere between $500 and $20,000.

Thankyou all so much for your advice and help.
I will now be rethinking a few things before leaping.
Thanks especially to PhilK, your advice has been absolutely taken on board and I am in the process of looking a little further into things.
As you can gather, I do not want to settle for only becoming a nurse. I want to study to the fullest of my ability and hopefully become a fully qualified Vet.

Cheers All

Good luck with everything, i really hope everything works out for you.
Its always the way that the people with the most passion and determination to do something with there lives have the most hassles.
As already mentioned borrow money or try for the loan now before you lose your job.

Also

TAFE Colleges are pretty good places
They usually have a student coordinator/counsellor on campus
Go and talk to them and see what they suggest, there must be a solution to this heaps of people study at TAFE

Good luck !!!!!!!!
