i know. i stand corrected, jack already pointed out that my statement was not factual. i've spoken to a friend who keeps them and on a few occasions he has told me this is why they watch them so closely in captivity and selected breeders are helping with a breed and release program..... thanks for the post python

every field guide and herp book they appear in says the same thing, habitat loss, poaching and the breakage/ collection of flat rock is severely affecting them. having such a small distribution range i believe these factors would be detrimental to their survival....
why are you guys so agitated, can we not just have a conversation?

It's because every crusade that these state authorities undertake is accompanied by a lot of propaganda - and not just in NSW, it's a characteristic of all jurisdictions. If these departments were audited on the effectiveness of their conservation activities, the stats would be dismal indeed, but they have to be seen to be doing something to justify the dollars they pull out of the public purse. What better way to ensure the survival of a species than by microchipping snakes already held in captivity - the horse has already well & truly bolted by that time.

i have decided there is a certain notoriety in having the worst reputation on aps.

Ha jack... I decided that long ago... it's a race to the bottom!

I would imagine micro chipping and monitoring of the captive populations would indeed take any temptation away from poaching by pulling fake breeds etc.
Seems like a logical move to me.

Yep... it'll stop any illegal dealings dead in their tracks I reckon... Yay! The environment is saved!!!

I was told that similar conditions have been placed on certain holders of chameleon geckos. Can anyone confirm this?
Also wouldnt be surprised in depressa get the same or similar conditions placed on them

hahaha, dont think even DECCW will try to microchip a gecko

I hope they start doing this with Egernia depressa, the habitat destruction caused by the illegal collection of the northern form is disgusting.

I get the feeling you don't aggree with DEC actions on the Broad heads in regards to their captive monitoring?
While the environment preservation is crucial (as we all know) at least reducing the poaching insentive surely must be a good thing.

you'd think microchipping or DNA tracking is enough, i cant see how knowing 14 days prior to gain or disposal is going to help the species.

You know nothing... it stops paper work breeding ect. All parks and wild life want to do is bend reptile keepers over and give them one even more so when the greens have a say in goverment the greens will be the death of this hobby

Dave, You know at least as well as I do that these activities might slow down the honest ones (and there's no proof of that), and all the others just go on as usual. It's not the keepers who have the damned things on licence that are the problem, and DECCW action like this won't come close to stopping them. That's if there is a problem with wild taking anyway - BHs are a small, specialised elapid with very limited appeal in the hobby these days. It's easy to invent a problem and then be seen to try and solve it.

REMINGTON microchipping and DNA tracking stops paperwork breeding.
14 day notification does not, perhaps it is you, that knows nothing.....

Well mr know it all or I mean know nothing lets say some ones *selling wc broads to some one in lets say qld where parks don't take dna lets say some one is going to sell these wc broad heads it gives dec 14 days to take dna ect of these animals and prove they where not breed in captivity to stop paper breeding ect

that doesn't make sense, parks should be taking DNA in QLD for BHs....... duh! and they would have to get an import/export permit, which would then notify parks that they are selling one anyway.....
do some more hypotheticals, this is fun....

as a member of the greens party with a much better understanding of their policies than you, i would like readers of this thread to know that this statement is bollocks.
maybe you could google our wildlife policies and educate yourself, and one day when you are mature enough to vote you could do so responsibly.

they have been known to microchip green and golden bell frogs, with obvious outcomes

hahaha, one frog to another ...
is that a microchip in your abdomen or are you just happy to see me

Keeping things off licence is becoming more and more appealing to people with these laws. With no licence, no hassle of these authorities forcing all this crap on you that really is nonsense.
And as stated, poaching is not the reason for these specialised elapids being hard to find. Yes poaching happens, but I don’t believe it has the impact people think it does on them. I know of people that can find a few in a day no worries. Right place, right time.
