NSW Licence Jumping from R1 to R3

Has anyone done this or know someone who has? I satisfy all of the requirements according to the advanced application and there is no mention of having to have R2 first but just don't want to waste my time getting my referees to write me references and put together the whole application if you have to jump through the stupid R2 hoop first.

Hey Dan, I'm pretty sure you can go straight to R3 if you have all the requirements mate.

However, I do think that you are meant to have exp. with a C1 elapid for a certain amount of time i moving on to other species? Don't quote me on that though...

I would give them a ring as well just to confirm - contact Allan McLean @ OEH/DEC.

Yeah that's one thing that might catch me out but that is only specified on the requirements list for R2 and I know plenty of guys who are on R3 or above that never owned any of the R1 elapids (mostly because of how hard they are to bloody find).
Maybe I will just contact them. Thanks man

I wrote this in another thread today as well but this is the application form. The requirements are on page 5:

It's surprisingly difficult to find this stuff. Anyone would think they don't want us keeping these animals. Oh wait...

I tryed to do the same 4 years ago with no joy .... I had to move move up the levels of licence year by year .... Good luck with it I hope there nicer to you

I tryed and they said get something like a brown tree snake etc and keep it for a year and re apply... they put me on R2 though.
Note.. anyone selling mild vens that can be kept on a r2 licence pm me

It's not what I would call easy. You need a fair bit of experience with them even if you haven't owned any and the point of going up is to own elapids since that is all that's on R3 and up. You also have to basically write them a 10 page essay on why you are capable. In my opinion the ones on R1 and R2 don't give you any insight into owning the higher class ones either.

Thanks for the input Peter and Bez. I've emailed them so I'm not wasting my time so we'll see what they come back with. I tried looking for a BTS ages ago and gave up because they were so difficult to find.

For those of you who are interested this is the response I got this morning:

"It is sometimes possible to go from R1 to R3. We will assess your application against the criteria based on the information supplied with your application. We then decide if you are successful or not. Cheers"

I get the feeling in my case it will get knocked back with a response similar to Bez's but at least they are saying it is possible
