i'd love to get a pet pig, but i dont have the space.

and they are clean and intelligent.

so good on ya xander

pigs make wonderful pets we were actually lucky enough to get two though our store. remember though that the ones from the slaughter house are huge, you can get mini pigs that get to about 35-40kg these makes great pets. if you get them from a good breeder they will be quite affectionate too. just keep in mind they can be demanding of your attention or food and they have enough power and the smarts to destory what ever is in their way.

I have Miss Princess my pet pig. And have had pet pigs for the last 15yrs. Dont get one from slaughter house. Your intentions are good but as they havent been socialised it will be more of a problem. They are usually sent to the abbatoir as a part of a contract so they probably couldnt sell you one anyway. It is common misconceptions that they are dirty, they stink and that they will eat anything and everything. Miss Princess has free reign of our property and has picked one spot down the back that she uses as her toilet, she doesnt dig the garden and knows that her food goes in her bowl. We have young kids who she loves to bits. They do need a mud patch in summer as they get badly sunburnt and they use the mud as a sunscreen. They are an amazing pet. Find a local piggery and try and buy either a week old one that you can bottle raise or a weanling that is still young enough to socialize. They will quite often sell you a runt. There is also Minature pigs advertised if size is an issue, but with the right socialising and training even the large whites (which is what Miss Princess is) can make fantastic pets. We had our Doris for 9yrs and she was a wild piglet when we got her and we all had to take a few days off from work and school when she died. She would even carry the peg bucket for me when I was hanging out washing and sit by my side when I was working in the vegie patch, she chased birds out of the vegie patch and the crows away from the baby lambs, she sat with the kids at the school bus stop and was there waiting for them in the afternoon.

Awwww wow Isis, your stories make me want a pet pig!!

Any pics of Miss Princess that you could share?

I wouldn't think meat pigs would be the best breed as a pet.

Quoted for truth.

I remember hearing a story about someone who did just that and although they ended up with a humongous friendly pet pig, it had so many health problems as feeder pigs aren't bred or 'designed' to live beyond a certain date and therefore their bodies can't handle the amount of bulk they carry.

(Not sure if that made sense)

Maybe one from one of thos awful breeder farms where they breed them in those awful tiny pens where the adult cannot even stand up!!!!!! I am SOOOOOOO against those people, I but free range bacon, AND eggs, only too happy to pay the extra, for obvious reasons!!!!!!!

a few years back a neighbour had a pet pig, it used to escape on bin nights and tip over everyones rubbish bins and eat all the food scraps. it did smell too, not stink just a piggy smell.

Isis, how do they compare to dogs for the amount of work required to keep?
Will they go nuts if left alone like a "pet" dog will? Dig holes, escape etc?
I don't think we are allowed to keep them as pets anyway, but it does sound interesting, I've always wanted a mini pig.

Pigs are banned where we live. Although we are rural all it takes is one person to make a complaint! then no more pig.

Magpie, the only up keep is the usual worming like your dog, cat, human. And if in summer they get sunburned ears/snout we put sump oil on her to protect it. I used to use zinc cream but due to the large areas it got costly. Feeding is cheap, pig pellets around $14 for a 20kg bag and fruit and vegie scraps from the kitchen or free from the back of the supermarket/ green grocers. As long as they have a muddy patch and their toilet area they are happy. Miss Princess would love to curl up by the fire but shes a bit to big now, so she has a sheltered area like a small shed that has her bean bag in it....she took it over when she was a baby and wont part with it now......

xander if you want to save a piglet and your on the gold coast go and try get one from the strawbeery farm. poor things (plus all the animals there) are hassled all day from kids poking them and trying to pick them up and they get dropped, never get fresh water. i live just round the corner from there and usually get the old veg from local shop and give them a feed over the fence where they can't see me and give them all fresh water when i can.

i think you need approval from the council to get a piggie too xander, i read somewhere that a guy on the gold coast was told to get rid of his cause the GCCC didn't give him permission to have one. i would think if your on acerage that you wouldn't have a problem.

Such little cuties!

IMO adopting a pig from a slaughter house is a little....um....pointless (not the right word)
I personally love baby pig on the spit :) but slaughterhouse pigs are bred for a purpose and are not used to humans...
I love these mini pigs and are much better as a beloved pet and are raised in the manner of a pet :) not as a pig on the spit :p
