Pink-tongued Skink
The Pink-tongued Skink is the sole member of the genus
Hemisphaeriodon, if you follow Hal Cogger's classification (therefore NPWS).
More recently Glenn Shea has placed this species in the genus
Cyclodomorphus, commonly known as She-Oak Skinks or Slender Blue-tongues.
As Dicco mentioned, Pink-tongues were once placed in
Tiliqua but it's significantly distinct from the 'true' Blue-tongues.
The one consistent zoological name is it's specific name
gerrardii, and the common name of Pink-tongue. Though some hyphenate and some don't.
In my opinion, tail circumference is not a reliable feature to determine gender. At this time of year, coming out of brumation, fat reserves are depleted like this skinny fella.
Proportion is more reliable, as head size compared to snout-vent length does not change seasonally.
This boy appears to me to have a relatively big 'boof' head.
As Dicco said:-
...probably a male, large head in comparison to body, but if it's young who knows.
Iceman, we really need to know what length this specimen is (roughly) ? :?:
Could you also please tell us what area it's from (approx.) :?:
Thanks
