Awesome critters, although i would imagine it must be near impossible to breed ants:lol:

it is impossible to keep thorny devils unless your are a zoo. you cannot keep the on a private licence full stop anywhere in australia.

I've seen a few unkept kitchens that make me disagree ;)

Hooglabah: I'm almost certain you are incorrect there. It's not generally legal in Victoria, but in other states it is not a problem. In QLD you would have no trouble as long as you were obtaining them from a legal source, I am fairly sure I have heard of people keeping them legally in SA, I certainly know of people doing it in NT although I'm not 100% sure whether it was under a private or zoo license, I don't know about NSW. In WA it would be illegal, as with Tas and presumably ACT.

In addition to the above, I won't say which state it was in, but I have seen captive bred animals in the flesh in a private collection, and if they weren't being kept and traded legally, the owner was lying to me, which I doubt. If you *really* wanted to, you could keep them in Victoria on a special private permit, but you would have to jump through a lot of hoops. People sometimes do it for certain species not on our general keep list, but I don't know of anyone doing it with Molochs, and frankly, they'd either be stupid or extraordinarily keen to bother.

I really don’t understand why some people have to get stuck into someone when they ask for a bit of information, this forum is FOR asking questions and getting answers, there is no harm in getting some information from people here. If it’s too much of a hassle for you to answer a question then the answer is simple, just don’t respond. I thought people would be happy to share their knowledge. It’s not always easy to get information from other sources, on here there are people who may have the first hand knowledge. I had to research licensing on Australian natives last year and it can be a bit tedious sometimes finding information on specific species and requirements. Especially as some animals were not even listed. And then there is the fact the laws and licensing vary from state to state. I don’t recall actually seeing Thorny Devils on the SA licensing list, I’ve never seen anyone owning one or one up for sale. But I won’t say it is absolutely impossible seeing as most of our laws here are pretty tame. If you can own one it would probably be under a specialist license.

Its not illegal in S.A keep and breed thorny devils. As long as you have nat pks endorsement for them its all good.

If you live in an ARID region you wouldn't have any trouble keeping and breeding thorny devils in an outside enclosure. They would quickly decimate any ant colonies in their enclosure so you'd have to lure ants in.... easy enough.

Remember, an arid environment... that means very dry.... Alice Springs/Western Qld/Western NSW kind of dry.

So, did Howard refuse to join in Kyoto in order to allow us to keep Molochs in Brisbane and Melbourne?

Top pics Ryan, thanks for posting... personally I could not think of anything worse than trying to keep them, well maybe if I lived in the tussocks (thats west of "the sticks") and had nothing better to do with my time.

To keep the ants up there are a few ways, like irragation hose sections cut out of it, then filled with honey and dog food, works well and the ants seem to stick to the hose but after a while the little bastards expand, nothing a few thornys cant fix, they knock them down pretty quick but you have to sty on top of them. To let everyone know they are being bred by a few people in aus in a few states, they are expensive and can be hard to look after. But if you have the ants no problems.
