I only drink diet soft drinks. Have equal in my coffee ect. Where was this article taken from?

An Editor's Note from the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation sums up the story:
“ "The report claiming aspartame causes MS, often referred to as the Nancy Merkle hoax, is believed to have been circulating since 1995. The message is attributed to "Nancy Merkle," yet no one has come forward claiming to be the author. No credentials, research or sources are cited. This hoax first came to the attention of the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation in 1998, when those circulating it added the false claim that the MSF was suing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to halt the sale and use of aspartame. The MSF neither condemns nor endorses aspartame, and has never filed suit against the FDA."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame_controversy#cite_note-MSF-14
The FDA states that the safety of aspartame is "clear cut" and "one of the most thoroughly tested and studied food additives the agency has ever approved."

Aspartamane breaks down into 3 things in digestion

50% phenylaline, one of the 9 essential amino acids, only a problem if you have PKU, aspartamane is digested faster than most phenylaline containing foods, so does have the potential to cause a spike in blood plasma levels

10% methanol.... a small amount, less than many fruits. methanol is also a natural digestion biproduct anyway, so out body is designed to flush the system

40% aspartic acid. this is an excitotoxin, capable of causing nerve and brain damage. it however requires active transport to cross the blood brain barrier.
while there are tests indicating that this amount os aspartic acid can cause neurodamage, these have been conducted on rodents, and rodents are significantly more responsive to excitotoxins than humans.
No link between aspartic acid and brain tumors has been discovered in humans, despite research into it for almost 30 years

I have seen this 1000's of times, people bash me with it, and people send it to me over and over again. I am a diabetic, and it's not easy finding interesting, edible stuff that's ok for me. It's even harder esiting the urge to join everyone else in buying "real" softdrink.
I have done my own research and deemed this over-reacting (JMO) - here's a few links I found useful

http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/aspartame.asp
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/hoaxes/hoaxDetails.asp?HName=ASPARTAME+HOAX

yes there are also a number of sites also saying it's true, but each to their own

ca't find any medical sites stating that it is true.
other than excess intake.... but then most people intake what is essentially a lethal slow death dose of sugar!

all my nutrition and dietetics text books (as quoted above) mark this down as yet another sad bored hoax

i figured the email was a hoax but i still aint drinking that diet crap... give me old school cocaine coke anyday.....

well Australis you probably would have been one of those people that thought the world was flat ....untill proven beyond belief that it wasnt now ....I dont claim to know all and was just amazed at how in depth it went and I personally wouldnt trust the so called friendly chemicals cause usually down the track in years to come, something comes up to prove why we shouldnt have ingested it .........the MORNING SICKNESS DRUG comes to mind how many mothers to be were told it was 100% safe to take during pregnancy ....and look at the poor outcome ...........its not that fictional to me in my opinion and like usual the stop sign or red lights dont get errected till after so many deaths even though blind freddy can see it is a danger zone ...........

actually the problem with the morning sickness drug was that it worked TOO well!

it did NOT cause birth defects.
it caused the mother to not abort her on pregnancies.
the 'child' was already of completely natural reasons deformed.

eitherway, aspartamane has been quite obsessively studied since the 70's.... not many drugs get that much research into side effects.
it has also been in out food since 1980.... long enough for long term side effects to be noticed

If you listen to the experts artificial sweetners are supposed to be carcinogenic too.

Looks like I'm in the poo then, my 12 week diet so far I've only drunk Coke Zero, about a bottle a day and had Sugarless sweetner in my 8 cups of coffee.

I'd be more worried about the pack of ciggies a day I smoke.

I drink coke zero like it is going out off fashion (at least 1.5L a day) and am happy to report no noticable side effects.......yet!

Isn't it funny that there is little to no emphisis put on the Cafine intake side of things?

and remember artificial sweetners have unsubstantiated links to cancers...

sugar has a DEFINITE link to diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease :p

well Australis you probably would have been one of those people that thought the world was flat ....untill proven beyond belief that it wasnt now ....I dont claim to know all and was just amazed at how in depth it.......

 .. ok just to be nice ill let you in on a secret, those emails that go into great detail
of a poor African who just needs a few dollars to unlock millions in a bank account
arent legit, but they can go into a lot of detail, so don't get hoodwinked old girl.. ;)

Oh what? Bugger. I wondered why the photo of the Nigerian girl I was sponsoring didn't arrive!!

not correct there forensick, the thalidomide drug used for morning sickness was a different stereo isomer to that which had been shown to be of assistance for pregnent women, it was the drug that caused the problem of "flipper arms"...

i would suspect that aspartame is like most things in life, too much is not good for you.

lmao@ AUSTRALIS ................I love poking you with a stick too:)......and thankyou Jack I thought it was the drug but not being 100% sure didnt state a point .....drink what you want its your body but in my opinion nature is far better then man made chemical substitutes.......
