hi everyone I found this little guy a couple of years ago when i was working at a summer camp in North Carolina, USA. Never knew what it was, the ranger suggested that it was an adult, but didn't know the species.

any ideas?

Looks like a little northern red bellied snake....Storeria occipitomaculata.
If it is then i'd say it was quite young, but they dont get much bigger.
Thats my guess anyway.

thanks Moreliaman!

it was a very placid little snake, i think i held it for maybe 20 mins while talking to my campers about snakes, and it just entwined itself around my fingers the whole time.

Yup Yup. Red bellied snake. They won't bite but they do curl their upper lip sometimes. It looks like they're snarling. I agree with the poster above. That's not quite an adult.
