Having no experience with incubating or either of these mediums, what is the difference between the two? Why is one better for snakes and the other for lizards? What about turtles?

I don't know why perlite is not supposed to be good for snakes. When I went to a hydroponics store a few years ago to buy vermiculite, the guy asked what I wanted it for and I said incubating snake eggs. He was really suprised and said I should use perlite. I asked why and he said that what everyone he knew used for snakes. I asked what sort of snakes and he listed a bunch of exotics!

The only turtle eggs I've incubated have been Chelodina longicollis. I think you could incubate these in media such as poisoned gravel, thumb tacks or marbles and they'd still hatch with no worries at all.
