I use Phillips spot lamps available from Bunnings for about $3-4. I have a platform that my shingles can get onto to bask under the light. Temps directly under the lamp are ~30-35 degrees, and they seem happy enough moving around their tank to regulate body temps. These lamps are a lot cheaper than the specialist ones which to be more or less identical.

I have a ceramic heat emitter for winter temps if required too.

Cheers

as for the wattage it would be trial and error what works for me would be differnet for someone else and different to yours there is to many varying factors whats the enclosure made from, ambeint temps, subsstrate, cage furniture, etc etc i could go all day, but your best best is to start with a temp gun and work from there

just remember glass is hopless at holding heat and you may have problems during winter but saying this i dont know what your winters are like if there is climate controll in the house/room

thanks snake whisperer i was going to use a heat mat but then people thought they were bad so........ with the problem of the glass not holding in heat could i stick wood around the tank except for the front would that fix the problem

dont use heat mat for the your shinlge there mainly for snakes use a top heat source, ceramic heater, halogen, incandescent etc etc

Mate if you put the wood on the inside it might help hold the heat a bit. How big is the fish tank you want to use?
