Hey folks

I managed to get my gun licence today, so now i've gotta buy a gun. Was looking at either 30.06 or 08, somethign that can take out buffalo and pigs. Was hoping there would be a few people here who can tell us a good place to buy and good gun brands etc.

do you need a licence for guns??

I almost bought an AK-47 years and years ago...I dunno what I would have used it for...feral cats in suburbia I guess ....anyway, I'm glad I didn't as the Port Aurther massacre happened and semi-auto were done for after that!

I always thought the 30-06 was a work of art and good for deer etc (not that I've ever fired one, just read a little bit about) :) I expect pics! ;)

i have a remington 7600 pump action rifle in .308. It works well on pigs and I have knocked over a few buffs with it as well.

Don't we know it...I too am jealous of those guys up there with their Hunting & fishng.
Off topic, I just got me a .17HMR for popping bunnies and foxes for something diffrent, am going to test her out in a couple of weeks....not your Buffalos but hey,it's something local...lol

If yor not already a member of your local hunt club or rifle club become one gordo.
These guys will help you with heaps of info.

This is just one in the darwin area, but you are really spoilt for choice where you are.

Well i don't know how well i'll go with a AK lol but i'm sure it would do just nicely on a pig, not sure about a buffalo though lol.

At the moment i'm looking at a stevens model 200 in probably 308 or 30.06. Comes with scope, has a 4 round internal magazine and all that jazz. I had a play with one about an hour ago only thing is they look and feel a little 'toyish' cause they are synthetic stock, nice looking gun though.

A bloke i was talking to was saying that anything that will kill a buffalo will be way too big for a pig. Now i thought if it is good enough to kill something big it will be good enough to kill something small... What is going on there?

A pump action 30-06 would be a good choice, i only know one gunshop in Darwin TEX GUN SUPPLIES, probably plenty more but i havnt ever been to Darwin. A lever action shotty with slugs would drop buffalo too. It depends if you want to get in close or just shoot what you see from a few hundred meters away.

there's buffalo in aus? wow never new that, hope u have fun with the shooting. and i think the guy means it will be over kill.

More powerful rifles will definately kill pigs, they are just over kill and may present an extra hazard of over penetration depnding on the type of bullet used. Rifles suitable for shooting buffalo kick a bit too, so arnt the best thing to start with if you are new to shooting.

It means if you want to kill for meat or trophy, it will be excessive.
If it's for feral control, it will be OK I guess, will def do the job on pigs! lol

Really wanting a rifle hey, the more i'm thinking and reading the stevens 30-06 seems to be the way to go everything i read and what i hear from people is that it's an awesome gun to shoot with accuracy to boot aswell. It's bolt action which is good cause i prefer a bolt action. But it might not be big enough to kill a buffalo and all the 200 models don't come with barrel sights which is a shame.

Oh and on gun clubs, unfortunatley i work in remote communities and am usually out in them for 5-6 days a week so i just wouldn't get time to join or get involved with a gun club. I would like to though.

Haha that's the other thing, i'm not a real huge bloke. A big factor in what calibre i should get.

i have .308 with scope 48x8 suits any wilds in NT.... 180grains or more with hollows bullets... beauty :)

What brand of gun? And how much did it set you back?

Have you heard much about the stevens 200 guns?

They are fairly new, best thing to do would be to google and see if there are any reviews on it. You generally get what you pay for, Sako is probably the best whle still good value, but cost over $1000 second hand. There are a range of good brands with rifles around $600-700 new, best thing to do would be to read a few reviews and then try and then check some out in a shop. Advice from gunshops(like any shop) could be directed more to what they want to sell than what is is best in some cases.

Yeah been reading a few forums and reviews on the stevens. they all seem to saythe same thing they are really good for the cost, very accurate and durable. But they apparently have an ordinary trigger, noisy and rough bolt and they kick like a mule lol.

On thing is i don't know any other brands to search lol. Sako sounds way out of my price range.

just a suggestion mate and i beg you to take it on board

dont start shooting with large caliber rifles

start with somthing small a .17 or a .22 if your really must have a centerfire then go a .222 or 222. remington.

if you want me to give a list of good reasons why you should start small and work your way up im happy to but like so many people out there you probably wont listen and go out and get you 308 or 30 06 and never fully reach your shooting potential.

its like running befor you can walk.
