Chickens v Rats

So a friend of mine breeds chickens and so gets heaps of roosters that she just 'knocks on the head'. I have a Stimmy and BHP and was wondering if I would be able to change them onto a chicken diet or if they won't get as much from chickens as they would from rats? Obviously would be great to have a free supply of food but not willing to cut costs if it's detrimental to their health

i have heard that chook poop is runny and horrendous :S
