Not sure how old this is but was just sent to me by a workmate

A photograph purporting to show a 55ft snake found in a forest in China has become an internet sensation.
It was originally posted in a thread on the website of the People’s Daily, the official Communist Party newspaper in China .

The thread claimed the snake was one of two enormous boas found by workers clearing forest for a new road outside Guping city,
Jiangxi province.
They apparently woke up the sleeping snakes during attempts to bulldoze a huge mound of earth.

On the third dig, the operator found there was blood amongst the soil, and with a further dig, a dying snake appeared,” said the post.

At the same time, another gold coloured giant boa appeared with its mouth wide open.
The driver was paralysed with fear, while the other workers ran for their lives.

By the time the workers came back, the wounded boa had died, while the other snake had disappeared.

The bulldozer operator was so sick that he couldn’t even stand up.”

The post claimed that the digger driver was so traumatised that he suffered a heart attack on his way to hospital and later died.
The dead snake was 55ft (16.7m) long, weighed 300kg and was estimated to be 140 years old, according to the post.

From like 2007.
The actual snake pictured is a Retic, and no-where near 55ft.

Ive seen this before, pretty sure it turned out to be a Diamondback rattlesnake, only around 10ft long.

It was in Central Kalimantan near Palankaraya
Although the camera gave a false impression it was still a huge retic
Extremely fat for a wild one and about 7 metres from discussions over here

To give some indication of its size the largest retic still alive in captivity is less than seven metres
Fluffy 1 2 and 3 were all way less even though Guinness reports them as more
Largest I have ever handled was a big female
7.85 metre and she died only about 3 weeks ago in Banjarmasin Kalimantan
That was one of 2 captured for relocation
But was pretty crook when caught

When Australia had megafauna we also had collosal snakes. A goanna substantially bigger than a Komodo dragon and a land crocodile with hoofs!

Not to mention carivorous kangaroos and a marsupial lion whose teeth had fused into shears for slicing through bone.

At least we wont see them hung up from an excavator like a sick trophy.

If on facebook, type in twinkie the worlds largest snake. I have had the pleasure of meeting twinkie in march

How did they estimate the age of the snake, did they cut it neatly in half and count the rings of flesh like a tree. 130 years old retic would be pretty amazing.

i remember when this first came out we worked out it was around 4.5 meters going off the known width of the excavator bucket. a decient snake but a long way from 55 feet
cheers
simon

That pic has been posted before though if correct a huge retic shame that man kind destroys so much habitat and animals everyday

Its not a fake pic
Just taken at an angle that made it look bigger

Well if twinkle is 7.2 she is the longest snake in captivity that can be publicly viewed
The mate of the Banjarmasin one is safely tucked away but is reported to be over 8,5 metres
There is another very big one in central Java at 6,9 metres and a pretty big one in England
