You only require a license to own the animals Jason not to actually care for them, I care for natives and exotics at work and don't have to carry a license to do so. Certainly would not consider taking on vens unless I had done a ven handling course, etc.

from the DECC website;Security and Access: The individual containers and the room itself must be locked when the licensee is not present in the room to prevent both unauthorised entry and/or tampering with containers/cages and the escape of snakes. Access to all Class 2 snakes must be limited to persons who are under the direct supervision of the licensee or to persons holding a Class 2 licence with the same category endorsement.

Ah yes well class 2 encompasses the vens, etc so a bit different to caring for class 1 animals and more security requirements, I did say I wouldn't be involved with vens unless I had the proper certs. I don't require a specialised license to care for the category 1 snakes at work(I don't care for the category 2 ones at this stage as I don't have handling certs, etc)

Although it is worded "snakes" i'm sure it would comply with all class 2 animals, Lace Monitors could easily start a serious law suit if a class 2 keeper got a class 1 keeper to look after them and they has their hand removed, even if the handless keeper was insured, the insurance agency would use this to back out of the deal, negligence on behalf of the lacey keeper who would then be sued and would most likely have to foot the expenses.

What the decc can't have shut him down. They don't care if you own the reptiles/have a licence/stole the reptiles they won't do anything for at least six months to a year. They are a useless waste of money. Sorry for the rant but I hate them so much at the moment.

Of course Jason I agree with you entirely there, we have lacies and perenties plus a scrub python and vens at work and they are formidable critters, not something to be messed with if you don't have experience.

Thanks for all of the info people, looks like she will advertise a service covering all animals. I would imagine that dogs and cats will always be the most popular ones but will also make it known that she can care for reptiles etc as well and would look at it on a case by case basis.
I can totally understand people do not want strangers knowing about there collections but there may be those amongst us (like myself) that do not have any family close to babysit and it may just be another option to consider.
I myself am also thinking of doing the snake relocation course with ERD which may alleviate some peoples concerns.

You dont need a sitting service for fish.. you can buy automatic fish feeders for like $20.. it will feed your fish for a month.. But reptile sitting is a good idea. because you cant just ask a friend to take them..
no weve seen what can happen there

Minding service update

Thought I would post an update on this, pet sitting and walking business is up and running. Fully insured and police checked operating in the Ipswich area at this stage. Have been reasonably busy over Christmas, no reptiles yet but have taken care of a very spoilt Scaly Lorikeet.
I don't think I am allowed to mention the business name on here (correct me if I am wrong please moderators) but if anybody is interested please PM me and I can provide the details.
