Wow, what a day!!!! Got a knock on the door earlier to find two RSPCA officers standing outside. They informed us that a complaint had been made against us and they were here to investigate!!!!
It was all I could do to stop myself falling off. the step! The complaint was made because of our cat!!!!
Our little girl, Tassie, has been through the 'wars' lately, in that she came indoors a while ago (she usually stays in), holding her left front leg in the air. She just couldn't put it down so after the initial check-over for burrs, prickles or cuts, we ended up at the vets. An x-ray showed nothing so the vet said she probably had pulled a ligament.
Leg still hadnt improved after a couple of weeks, even though it didn't seem to cause her any pain, but she did spend a day absolutely miserable, not wanting to eat, drink or move. Turns out, the vet found she had a raging temp. An overnight stay, a shaved neck and drip and further x-rays and a course of antibiotics later, she came home, still not to improve. Next visit saw another x-ray, and they shaved her elbow joint to draw fluid from that joint to check it. The labs found a particularly nasty infection/inflammation which required specialist drugs, the only ones that would do anything to it. So we are now in the situation where I am performing a regular morning wrestling match with her to get HALF a perishing tablet down her throat (SHE HATES ME NOW!!!!!) and hubby offers her the other tablet, which she happily eats out of his hand (swine won't swap jobs neither!!!!)
This is the point we are now at, expecting yet another visit or two to the vets yet, and here we are, RSPCA officers knocking on the door!!!!!!! Didn't take much to show them just how much she was being cared for (the vets bills, $1000, and all the drugs she's got). The irony of it!!!! It really hit a funny bone with me that someone should spot the two shaved patches on her (neck and elbow) and come to the conclusion, cause she is on three legs, that we are mistreating her, if anything, it's the other way............. you should see my arms where she digs her claws in during tablet-taking time!!!!!!!!
However, having said all this, I am really glad that someone actually cares enough about the animal to do what they did. Because they didn't know the situation, they assumed cruelty was rife, (it IS.... TO ME!!), but I was pleased that they did care enough to actually DO something about it, I know now that any animal around here is fairly safe!!!!! There is soneone looking out for them.

Sorry this is a bit long, but it was such a surprise, we watch the RSPCA programs on TV, never suspecting for a minute that we would be one of the individuals the organisation would call on.. LOL! (and no, there were NO cameras there!!!!!)

Wow, you dominated the RSPCA workers. Owned. Well done for putting in so much time effort money and pain into saving your cat! :D

What the Hell was the cat doing outside unsupervised? That's cruelty to your cat and the local wildlife. The RSPCA will waste resources tracking down shaved patches on a cat, but happily condone you letting them play in traffic and murder countless native animals. There's your irony, not the scratches on your arm which you willingly accept.

Ahh ya gotta love the sticky beak neighbour. We have one of those, catch em looking through the cutains all the time.
As for giving the cat pills. We would crush the pill up with a bit of water and suck it up with a 1ml syringe. Then squirt the meds in tis mouth stand back and laugh at the faces the cat pulls. beats trying to put a pill in a shaking cats head.

Hey, thanks for that, gives me hope that I really WILL survive the morning!!!! LOL

The only wild life left in north Adelaide would be feral bird and human species.

And feral cats, thanks in no small part to the wonderful cat owners might I add.
YOU obviously HAVE NOT been out bush and seen what FERAL DOGS although most just stick with the term wild dogs (and i am not talking about pure blood dingo) do to native and domestic animals .......get off the cat hate wagon we have numerous so called feral animals and domestic animals that cause impacts on our aussie wildlife.......including feral humans!

I agree with redbellybite get off the hate wagon with cats. i have 4 and consider myself a responsible owner. its people who hate cats that trap, injure and dump them, i have even known young hoons to run them down WHO IS THE FERAL HERE??:(

Pity your neighbors had nothing better to do than be a pain in the bottom. Oh well, got throughit alright which is good!

As an aside, feral this, feral that, it's humans that caused the problem in the first place. Idiotic as saying "I hate sharks because one bit me!" Of course it bit you, it's a friggin shark!

Tis a shame when ppl jump to conclusions. I have a Pit Bull cross who had 7 tumours removed a week ago. I've had quite a few dirty looks lately while out walking cause she looks a little like a patchwork quilt at the moment. Im used to ppl crossing the road when they see us coming, but now they run! If only they would give her a chance, she'd lick em to death!

there is 11, 000, 000 stray cats in Australia.

if exotic reptiles can effect our native fauna, why are cats allowed in?

By 'responsible owner' you mean you keep your cats inside? none of us have a problem with that. If you keep your cats inside they won't be trapped or injured.

well instead of just pointing the finger at cat owners why not point a general finger at all pet owners of domestic feline and canine species..........dog attacks happen too but it rarely gets a post on here but cats seem to come up every week.......

This is not true, northern Adelaide is home to many skinks, snakes, frogs native birds and a few marsupials to.

Having a cat outside on its own without supervision is not a good thing and using the scarcity / rarity of wildlife as a reason to condone it is F,ing crazy

The other day i watched a nieghbours cat stalk some birds that were on our naturestrip.
I took the cat the nieghbours and told them to keep it in or i would take it to pound if I caught it again.
I might just step on its neck next time it comes near my place.

Good to hear you keep your cat in (most of the time anyway) dipcdame and at least you try to keep your animals in good health.

Cheers

its ironic that the way you are all talking is the same as old fashioned people talk about snakes. because snakes are just a pest to them and maybe next time one comes into the yard they might just step a shovel onto its neck instead of calling for someone to remove it. a cat does what a cat does, anyone who would kill a pet cat just because it is in their yard is no better the the 30 year old living with his mum torturing guinea pigs in the basement.

but lets make it very simple. .......................its a life!
