There's no pet insurance to cover reptiles :?

Called several insurance brokers, agencies, the RSPCA and a herp vet.

If there was such insurance in Australia, how would the insurance companies be sure that people did in fact have their herp stolen and it wasnt residing at a fnds place or some other dodgy scheme? :?:

I guess that's why it doesn't exist.

The same thing could be said about cars of or any household goods though. Surely if you can show a break and enter and write the reptiles of the license book that is enough to show you arnt lying?

We have been over this several times, reptile cover is available in many parts of the world but not here unfortunately. I have no idea why we can't get it here, possibly something to do with numbers ?

Reptile theft is an odd thing, as is much other theft.
Most herps I've known to be stolen are quite low in value, RBBS, copperheads and coastal carpets being some of the ones that I can remember. Sure, there's been a few greens stolen (this theft of Neil's animals seems very similar to the MO of a recent theft of greens to me) but by and large, it's an opportunistic thing.
One of my other hobbies in growing bromeliads. I've known many people to have $10 bromeliads stolen from their yards. $10?????? Surely even the most rectally restricted person could afford that rather than destroy someones garden?

Money does not seem to be the issue, otherwise why leave more valuable animals there?

well in that case im not guna get a green tree python in a hurry, imagine spending 10-20 grand on a snake and some lowlife steels it. I do believe I would end up in jail if they were caught.

It's TOSSERS like that who spoil it for the rest of us. People are less likely to invite others to see their herps in fear of getting their animals nicked. It is very sad I reckon.
Sorry to hear Neil

i hate to repeat what everyone else has said, but yes. look close to you. they knew what they were doing and where they were going. ahh but for the days when man-traps could be used! (although they would have been necessary if they were being used)
Beautiful snakes. hope they're recovered.

This kinda crap makes me wonder wether i should keep goin with this hobby

Hi Jacob, We can't let people like these scumbags deter us from enjoying our hobby. If you they have won. What goes around comes around. I pray that if they get caught that their names will be published for one and all to see.

Yes you are right, i guess it was just a heat of the moment thing, i love the herps and allthough it is a terrible thing to have happened we cant let it break us!

Thank you for reminding me

I went to one guys house the first time I meet him he took me straight through to show me his collection that was in a shed down the back.

He had a woma, bhp, everything except a GTP.

I could not help but think that tankeing stranges down to see his collection may not be a good move.

It is a shame that there is a dark side to this industry.

I seems quite reguarlly drug dealers a busted with drugs and snakes.

Strangly enough a very similar case occured with a well known lorikeet breeder in sydney last year. Apparently he would usually go to the bird club meeting alone but on this occasion he took his wife, while he was away they cleaned him out, from memory there were about $60000 in birds taken.

Had a person(from this site) wanting to by a mac off us this season.More or less demanded to see the breeders as well as the rest of the collection or else he wouldn't purchase one.

People often get upset when they are asked to meet somewhere neutral but these people have to understand that not everyone can be trusted.Unfortunately you can't tell the honest from the dishonest.Even if someone is above board they can talk to someone and pass on information unwittingly.

Those that think it only fair to look over someones collection before purchasing an animal should have a rethink and put themselves in the sellers shoes. Then there is the quarantine issue but thats another story.

Sorry to hear about it Neil, I hope the B@***rd who did it feels bad and brings them back!!!!!. Good luck !!!!

Regards Luke.

I don't worry about meeting somone in a neutral place cos' i can understand how breeders, especially somone like Neil would feel. I feel for anyone who's had their pride and joys knocked off. Grubs!

Simone.

all im gunna say bout that is who ever it was is a no good piece of scum and should be lined up and shot

Unless we know someone well ,we meet at a servo or something. If someone wants to see the breeders we send email of pics ,and if thats still not enough they should start looking elsewere for a snake cause its just not worth the risk of theft or disease.

A mate got all of his greens stolen 10 years ago and didnt get them back. Thats got to suck bigtime

Sorry to hear what has happened - as part of the team at Canberra Exotics I will let everyone know tomorrow to pass the word just in case they try to sell them in Canberra somewhere. Also this wednesday is the Monaro Amphibian & Reptile Keepers meeting & we will let the membership know as well to keep a eye out.
