Hi everyone

Here is another one of my questions.

As a few of you know from my previous posts I have food intolerance. I am always scouring the web for information and am finding out more and more about how food affects us.

Anyway I am about to be qualified as a psychologist (in early september I will be submitting my final report and application to the reg board) and I work as a counsellor. I am finding eincreasingly as I am talking to people that they often...not always..but often have issues with food.

Anyway I am thinking that it might be good for me to get a qualification in...something....that would qualify me to actually do more than just point people in the right direction for information.

I am wondering if there is anyone on the list who is studying....and I would be looking for something other than being a dietician.....I am not sure if naturopath is the right path.

Is there anyone out there on AAPS studying alternative medicine and if so what are you studying and is there a course you would recommend ?

Kind Regards

Elizabeth

I would strongly recommend you avoid the alternative medicine angle. Generally alternative medicines are at best medicines that are not evidence based or at its worst known to do nothing more than placebo.. homeopathy is a textbook example.

Maybe you could find a post grad course in food science ? I would be dubious of any course relating to alternative medicine that isn't evidence based. Especially if you are going to be using it as a base for recommendations to people.

ive been having a look at courses in nutrition.

I just want to have something that takes me to a diploma level as I will have registration with Aphra as a psychologist and will be a member of other organisations so I dont need to get to bachelor level or anything like that. I just want to have something that legitimises me practicing and means Im not practicing outside of my expertise. if that makes sense...although at the moment from my reading on the web its pretty unregulated anyone can say they specialise in diet.

I'll help you here...

1) If you don't like it... Don't eat it.

2) If you deep fry it, it's tastier but not as good for you.

3) If you're allergic to it, don't eat it (or rub it into your skin).

4) If it tastes too good to be true, it's bad for you, but eat it in small amounts.

5) Everything in moderation including moderation.

6) Organic foods are exactly that... Ironically, I've never actually eaten inorganic foods - though once I ate some salt, I guess that can be classed as inorganic.

I can actually recommend a really good book that I am reading by Dr Karl - Brain Food. It's a VERY good book that could give you some ideas on where you'd like to head:

i know all that silly androbably a bit more

I just want to formalise my qualifications with the right course !!

If I was looking down the alternative medicine path I would seriously look at becoming a witch doctor.

Whatever you do, don't waste your time on naturopathy. I think personal study would be sufficient. There aren't that many things to memorise. I always wondered what dieticians studied for so long  .
