I think a licence or the microchipping is a good idea. Its everywhere now with the people who buy a cat on impulse and then after 2 weeks dont want it anymore. So when it is roaming around during the day they dont care. I agree with Midol what we need is responsible ownership.
 
As good as alot of natives are as pets we need to remember they are not domesticated animals. They will never be as good at being a pet as dogs and cats. It is sad but from my experience with native mammals they just don't make affectionate pets and that is what most people would want out of small cuddly things.
That about sums it up, i'm yet to come across a native furry that would be remotely classed as being a good pet.
