I think the use of the word "waste" by the OP is quite offensive. I'm sure he/she probably spends money on things that others would see as a waste of money. Some people "waste" money on cars, motorcycles, houses, holidays. It's called choice...
One of the things people don't seem to realise about GTPs in particular, is the amount of time and intensive attention it can take to get hatchies started. I've spent dozens of frustrating hours with some of my animals before they finally get the hang of routine feeding, far more than for run-of-the-mill carpets and other species. You get what you pay for - one poster here said you can pick up a bargain if you look around... I would be very wary of "bargain" GTPs, which may be illegal imports or of similarly unknown heritage. Reliable Australian breeders who sell established snakes are concerned about the future of their animals when they pass them on, and will generally be prepared to give (almost) unlimited assistance to the new buyer.
As I said, you get what you pay for...
