just wondering how many of you feed your snakes rabbits as i gave my diamond 1 on friday night and she went nuts over it i mean she just loved it

yeah i was wondering that aswell because my brothers mate catches rabbits and can get me pinky rabbits to feed for my little snakes. i havnt tried them yet but i would of course freeze them for over 4 weeks.
would you people think its alright?

these rabbits have been frozen and would you be able to feed rabbits all the time instead of rats as i am going to alternate ie a couple of rats then a rabbit

At the risk of repeating myself I feed rabbits in preference to rats for food items over 200grams as I believe that most rats over 200 grams each are too fat. our adult blackheads, olives and morelia all eat rabbits 600-1000 grams each with no apparent problems. I have seen snakes have problems swallowing large dry rabbits as I think they cant get a proper grip through the fur. All our rabbits are thawed in hot water so wet when fed.

We feed rabbits here, our Olive is majority rabbit fed, and the two Darwins get smaller rabbits when we can get them.

I dont think theres anything wrong with it, its just like feeding them mice or rats the animal is being bred for food, hey even like cows are bred for our food rabbits are being bred for snakes food, and i assume are being killed humanely

i plan on feeding mine rabbits as soon as i move to syd and start breeding them i cant breed them in qld ill see how i go

I was under the impression (correct me if i'm wrong) that rabbits are highly fatty... the only reason is that my friend in the army said on their survival training they were told to eat other animals than rabbit if they had to hunt to survive, cause it's just fat and not much else in terms of nutrition. What do you reckon? The pinkie rabbits i've had have seemed very blubbery... ?

but then again snakes pretty eat anything thats warm and moving in front of them

rabbits arnt fatty at all, very lean and high in protien
better to feed larger pythons rabbits than large rats
as the large rats carry way to much body fat

Are they wild caught you are using or domestic rabbits?

Thanks dazza74, anyone using wild caught rabbits at all? If so anyone had any problems with them as I'm thinking of using them.

Hmm really they're lean? I'll definitley look at getting more then. The ones i was using seemed so blubbery (they didn't have any fur so maybe it's like baby puppy fat kinda thing?)

How long does a decent size rabbit take to thaw using hot water?

Nightowl, Say 3 x 600g rabbits in 3 litres of boiling water and they are ready to go in half an hour. For bigger quantities you'll need to change the water. I take them out of the water for a couple of minutes and feel their neck where it enters the scull as that area seems to be last to thaw. I guess the bone scull insulates the inside.
