Hey guys nd gals.

I'm wondering if there is any NEW news on Npws and DECC alowing nsw pet shops to sell reptiles?

Cheers
Damien

friend of mine who works at the pet shop at broadway (sydney) said they were booked into seminars because they were aiming to reptiles in their shop around august.

Just wondering will they be able to sell specific reptiles or will all licenced reptiles be sold?

Will

Wow.. i hope it doesnt happen...half the Pet Shops around here have no clue..

I think DECC have their hands pretty full atm with other agendas, I can see the petshop thing being strung out for some time yet.. like womas on class 1....so much red tape and no scissors in sight!

i thought it wasn't going to happen. well thats what i heard in the pet store world.

i was told by someone can;t remember who but they told me that reptiles will only be going into petshops with owners that have had 5 or 10yrs experience keeping and breeding them. it may not be true but thats just what i was told

i understand that they are trying to make a buck but seriously snakes wont be looked after they arnt going to sustain heating and underfeeding would be very common because its gunna cost them too much and then if they do everything right how much are they gunna charge.

That wont be the case, Thats a restriction of trade issue although not being able to sell them only in N.S.W is restriction of trade anyway . There will more than likely be a T.A.F.E type course that staff of any shops selling reptiles will have to attend before the shop can retail reptiles and amphibians.

Sorry, but this sounds like a load of rubbish to me.

Feeding costs are lower than that for dogs and cats and heating isnt going to be a major issue. Yeah, it probably means the animals will be more expensive than you can get from a private breeder, but when you buy anything through a middle-man, its going to be more expensive...

I cant believe shops are not allowed to sell reptiles in NSW.

Your government is beyond stupid.

But then look at the road tolls you happily pay i guess im not suprised.

Hope it doesn't happen. It is just another step to the total commercialisation of the reptile trade like we see in other states such as Victoria, where many people seem to view the "lower" classes of reptiles as being desposible.

Talking to A pet store owner in penrith he said that there hoping after completing some courses that in august they will be able to sell reptiles to licence holders .

As for seminars and having reptiles in shops by August, where have people heard this (other than from pet store owners)?

Where are the seminars being advertised?

The last time I spoke to (ironically) a pet store owner about this, they had pretty much given up on being allowed to sell reptiles through pet stores and were going down the path of getting the necessary licence to allow them to display reptile exhibitions, with the intention of using that to display reptiles in their store. This isnt ideal, though, as the licence restrictions apparently only allow them to display animals about 50 days per year.

I find it ridiculous that a petshop should be able to do one course and then be able to hold a large number of reptiles and give other people advise about them.
