:lol:Hey Guys,
This is my first thread ive started, im a vet science student and i seen a similar thread started on a different forum so i thought being new here i will have the chance to get people to voice their opinion and tell me what they think. The question is What would you guys like to see from your vet in relation to your animals? I saw the thread about someone complaining about vets and their busy schedules so i thought that i would give people the opportunity to let me know what they would be looking for in an exotic vet ( im specialising in exotics btw :D) So come on guys let me know what you would like to see from the profession towards yourself and your animals? Is there any specific things you would like available at your exotic clinic? I want to know what everyone thinks in regards to vets and their animals :) and what are some things that have frustrated you or you found not good enough when dealing with vets. Be honest im very intrested

good luck you will more than likely cop a bunch of rants but good luck im glad your interested

hey hey
I would like my vet to know a large amount about snakes i took mine to a guy who said he knew heaps about snakes and deals with them all the time... i think he was more scared of my calmest snake then my little brother is... so that would be a good start... havent been to a vet again for my snakes.

Im a final year vet student myself.. how are you "specialising in exotics?" You can't sit membership exams until you've been working as a vet for 4 years, and then you still need to sit your fellowship exams...

for the vet to not be judgemental,
even for dog and cat stuff, i find a lot of vets try to give you the "guilt trip" treatment,

also like the vet to be compasinoate about treating the animal, and not treating it like just another number /paying customer.

its also good if the vet is willing to take the time to expalin things to you, some vets ive been to have been recluctant to explain what is going on with the animal and what can be done to treat it.

and with exotics it can be verry stressfull for the owner to have a problem and not know waht is going on, as often when that have issues, there very strange and alien compared to the sorts of problems that one would expect to see in more common pets like cats and dogs.

What i meant is that is the path i want to go down by in the future. Sorry if i didnt word it properly. GL btw :)
Very intresting guys keep em coming. Love hearing your experiences

someone who actually gives a crap about the animals and not the profit!...someone who actually remembers why they became a vet :)

Give a thought to assisting wildlife free of charge, where possible.

Isn't there a government incentive to do that anyway? I know here all you have to do is bring in a native and walk out.

a vet that will talk in "normal" english, i have been to many vets for animals and most of the time they bable on about something that i do not understand when they could have just said the dog has an infection in its paw and these are the treatments.

To be honest if they are unsure and to have a sound knowledge basis in the first place.

To be capable in handling the animals that are their patients, whether this be a snake or a dog in pain.

To treat the animal and their owners well (friendly and respectfully).

Most of the time people do really want to do the best they can for their animals- sometimes high costs prevent this from happening. I know it is a difficult issue, but maybe some type of payment plan could be offered, if there is a genuine need.

I want them to be honest about an animals chances. So many vets will charge the moon for an animal that will not make it.

At the local vet i go to , all the furry/fluffy animals are smiled at and spoken too like children by the vet staff.
But when it comes to my snake, they seem so unaware, that its a pet, with a name too.Loudly professing, their dislike for snakes!!
I realise snakes arent everyones cup of tea, but im not fussed on birds, but they too get treated like cute little things that they talk to in 'bird/kid talk'.
Just seems a bit biased. and oldfashion.

Intresting point. I remember when my ragdoll got hit by a car. He was rushed into emergency and it was the first time i ever go to this doctor, who took 4 hours of his time on surgery and didnt charge me because my cat passed away. Btw i know the opinion on cats and they are all strictly indoor, he slipped out for literally 5 mins when a child that was visiting opened the door and forgot it. Thats the kind of Vet i wanna be, they are rare and far between indeed

that kind of vet is not rare. but the kind of vet who is in the position to do so is rare. it is a job as well, the business charges for what is done, most of the time it is not the vets choice unless they own the buisness.

Totally. Peter owns the clinic and since then he has been my vet. Always asks about uni and what im up to. Great guy really. And i know how it is Helikaon its all very costly for the clinic as well, but on a sidenote some clinics are ridiclous with their pricing IMO. But thats with everything i guess not just vets.

cheap is not often a representative of good care. i suggest clients choose their vet according to expriences rather then cost.

Yeah I recommend Mark Hill to anyone in Adelaide no better care IMO (and many others for that matter) He has worked with everything you could think of and then some (being the back up vet for the zoo and all) I was told that he even treated a whale at some stage. Not only this but he knows how to handle snakes!
