Hi guys,
i need advise I have a 6 month old gtp that has an enlarged heart very noticeable in the little fella. He eats and is active etc does anyone have any advise for me to help me ensure his survival ?
The vets in my region wouldn't have experience in heart problems in snakes and there isn't alot of information out there to help me help him. Anyone had this problem I know it's very rare in pythons and has absolutely nothing to do with husbandry, it's just one of those things that can't be prevented. Should I look at getting him euthanised before the poor things heart explodes/ heart attack ?? Not sure what to do!!

Are you sure about the vets? There are some pretty decent reptile vets on the GC, Peter Wilson, Che Phillips, Michael Woodcock... and it would be worth a trip up to Deborah Monks at Mt Gravatt.
Even if they aren't experienced they would have connections to a specialist vet I'm sure

I bought a hatchling Roughie, that turned out to have an enlarged heart. Pretty noticeable too. I took it to my reptile vet to get checked out.

He told me, there is always a CHANCE it could drop dead one day, but because it's eating fine, moving fine and overall, is in good health, IF it was to drop dead, he wouldn't expect it for a number of years, if ever.

Just because it has an enlarged heart, it doesn't mean it's going to die early, but there is a higher chance then a normal python. If over all, it's healthy, then you shouldn't worry to much.

I mean, look at Farlap. That horse went pretty good for having an enlarged heart.

Where abouts in CQ?

If you're near Gladstone/Boyne then St. Clair at the Boyne Tannum Vet Practice is really good with reptiles.

Hey vixen , yes I'm in gladstone. I have heard that their is nothing that can be done about it, vet or no vet. Just see how he goes. He has a huge swollen heart but hoping he lives a few years and happy

Yeah just thought i'd mention it if you ever did need to see a vet, he's the one to go to. :)

Good luck with your little one though.
