Trouble with those IR guns is their accuracy, the one pictured has an quoted accuracy figure of +/-1.5% or +/-1.5deg C. As per Jax the best is a good quality mercury thermometer. If you check/calibrate all your electronic thermometers against one of these you can't go to far wrong.

here's an idea if the tube light is putting out too much heat... turn it off.

That's already been suggested

… and only turn the light on when you are home to look at them (the snakes) assuming they are in a room that would get some natural light during the day

Well yeah I would turn it off but I keep my room dark so need her to have her day light hours with the light on
