There was paper underneath so he oviously found a way to get under the substrate and paper.

yeh i guess, have u tried using the crumble without newspaper underneith? without paper there being a coastal i doubt he'll try and dig under the substrate.

Just a note on the reptile one heat mats, I believe they only have a thermal diode for overheat protection rather than a thermostat, I have one and left to it's own devices can reach 45degrees.

Seen one on eBay and is built in to only go 10 degrees hotter than the ambient temp
But on a good day here in summer it's like 30 degrees
