Here’s a TIP. If you’re in Arizona, don’t break the law.

Update on Joe Arpaio!TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona ) who created the " Tent City Jail":He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them. He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights Cut off all but "G" movies. He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects. Then He Started Chain GangsFor WomenSo He Wouldn't GetSued ForDiscrimination. He took away cable TV Until he found out there was A Federal Court Order that Required Cable TV ForJails. So He Hooked Up The CableTV Again Only Let In The Disney Channel And TheWeather Channel. When asked why the weather channel He Replied,So TheyWill KnowHow HotIt's GonnaBeWhile TheyAre WorkingONMy Chain Gangs. He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value. When the inmates complained, he told them, "This Isn't The Ritz/Carlton. If You Don't Like It, Don't Come Back." He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More On The Arizona Sheriff:With Temperatures Being Even Hotter Than Usual In Phoenix (116 Degrees Just Set A New Record), the Associated Press Reports: About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barbed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment At The Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their Government-Issued Pink Boxer Shorts. On Wednesday, hundreds ofmen wearing boxers wereeither curled up on theirbunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 DegreesInside The Week Before. Many Were Also Swathed InWet, Pink Towels As SweatCollected On Their ChestsAnd Dripped Down To TheirPINK SOCKS."It Feels Like We Are In A Furnace," Said James Zanzot,An Inmate Who Has Lived In The TENTS for 1 year. "It's Inhumane."Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates:"It's 120 Degrees In Iraq And Our Soldiers Are Living InTents Too, And They Have To Wear Full Battle Gear, ButThey Didn't Commit Any Crimes, So Shut Your Damned Mouths!" Way To Go, Sheriff!Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeatoffenders.Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves. Sheriff Joe was just re-elected Sheriffin Maricopa County,Arizona.

Hel yes he should come here and be elected i would vote for him!!!

Oh he does sound like a twat and will probably be in a freak accident in the 'tents' one day but they have a valid point about making it too comfortable!

Good on him, couldnt agree more with his stance.

what!!!!! No floggings??? oh well it's a work in progress

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

I'll bet the local council and city workers are real happy about that.

Theres a reason we don't use chain gangs any more.

Further to that, I think Sheriff Joe has created an extremely volatile and dangerous work environment for his prison guards. Again, there is a reason that cigarettes, television and such are allowed in prisons. A complacent prisoner who can take solace in his small luxuries is much less likely to riot, or stab a guard (or another inmate) through pent up aggression and frustration.

Now, I'm all for making prison a tough place to be and I'm all for making it as cheap as possible to run, but you have to bear in mind the safety of the inmates (they aren't all child rapists, remember) and the staff. I'm happy to agree that the liberal left has let prisons in general become too soft, but I think Sheriff Joe has simply gone too far the other way, making them too hard.

Is their any evidence that this system works? What is the actual reason for inprisonment, preventing crime or revenge? Sounds like this system would actually ruin more lives than it protects.

Prison is not ment to be payback but is ment to be rehabilitation, punishing prisoners like this will not help them, if anything it will harden them!!! basically if you treat a prisoner like crap they will come out worse than when they went in. This sheriff is a twat and should not be running a prison!!!

So jail time is not meant to be a punishment? I'm confused then why some people get a longer sentence than others. Do they have a formula for working out how long rehab will take for that person?

thumbs up to him all the way!!!

hes halfway there to "an eye for an eye" which is how the world should be! bring back capital punishment!!!

well its punishment in a way, your stuck there for the time prescribed, but the whole idea is they are meant to come back out and be fit to live in a normal society! But we all know this is not always the case. As for rehab, I personally think it does not work for some people eg. pedeos. But what i am trying to say, a non violent druggy goes in and comes out anrgy and violent if they get treated like crap. What is the point?

As much as i like the idea of eye for an eye, it just doesnt work!!!

Jail time is meant to reduce crime rates. How it achieves this is really one of the great struggles of the twenty first century. Many crimes are crimes of passion or dependance, and in those cases the possibility of a lengthy jail term has no impact. They simply don't consider it when they commit their crime. Having said that, fear of a lengthy jail term can act as a deterrent for many people, and certainly has an impact on reducing crime.

You have to consider that, while the offender is locked up, they cannot harm others in society. You also have to consider that when you eventually release them, they have to want to conform to societies norms. Making them hate the system isn't going to get anyone anywhere.

Further, many people will simply look at it as a cost-benefit ratio. Is it worth robbing a bank (or a service station, or whatever) if I can get $10,000, and serve ten years?

It is telling that the developed nations have jails bursting at the seams, and continue to have high rates of crime. Obviously, the systems as they are could stand to be improved.

Putting them in that prison will harden them, yes, but when they kno if they do ANYTHING wrong again they will end up back in the hellhole and have to do the same time. So in a good way, it will teach them a lesson!;)

IMO prison should be a last resort, criminals should simply be executed(obviously only extreme crimes beyond any doubt eg. martin bryant, pedophiles etc.), fined, given community service/work etc. as suitable for the crime. Fines should be a portion of a persons total assets if they are rich enough that the fine is trivial(i realise some could get around this but many wouldnt).

I think its just absurd that we as tax payers have to pay so much money to look after criminals. It just a half butted punishment that ruins their lives and gets them 'good' hook ups and criminal knowledge.

IMO all prisoners should have to work top pay for there own imprisonment and be allowed to work and earn extra as insentive to be satisfied with living a crime free life of working.

I think all the money that would no lenger need to be wasted would be better spent making sure innocent ppl dont get punished.
