I have been reading up about the Mercury Vapor Globes, and I am being informed that they are THE best thing on the market for providing UVA and UVB rays.
I am wanting to know what kind of heat they can ammit. Are they as powerful as a ceramic heat emitter??
I want to get one for my bobtail and basically need to know if i will still need the ceramic heat emitter in conjunction with the mercury globe. His basking spot is currently 40 degrees and i want to keep it at this temp.

Any advice????

:)

They pump out a heck of a lot of heat... I ran a 100w MVB in a beardy set up for years and the basking spot was 45cm away and still hitting 40-43C. Defenitely not the light you want in a small set up.

Thats actually what i wanted to hear :) I wanted to increase the size of my bobtail's enclosure and was conserned the MVB wouldn't give me that 40 degrees i am after.
How long do they last?

I use them in my large frill neck enclosure get 45-48 degrees in the basking area at a distance of 25-30cm easily. Frillies love it really hot tho. As for the uv, who knows?, unfortunately you have to trust the manufacturers word on how much uv output their globes give unless you have a good uv detector which is $$$$. According to some sources they should be replaced every 12 months. I use exoterra, bit dearer than some but haven't lost a globe to malfunction yet. Oh, and I use 160watters.

No guarantee really, anywhere from 6 months to a year then the ballast starts to crap out. I've had ones blow out after 3 months then others last over a year.

And whatever you do, when you buy globes go to an electrical wholesaler. You won't get electrician prices but will be heaps cheaper than retail stores.

The glass needs to be specially treated to allow UV to pass through, so you need to buy specialist globes such as mega ray l exoterra or the herpnshop ones!!
