Guess What I Might Be Getting?

OK so my dad has recently done pretty well for himself in a business venture and has 'some spare cash' lying around. We flew to Melbourne the other day (I'm there now) and on the plane we got to discussing my hypo bredli hatchy I might be getting this season, and discussing its enclosure etc etc that he wants to help me make.

Anyway I told dad (who likes pythons but doesn't know heaps) that a hypo bredli gets big and fat and is red with whiteish splotches... Dad said "that sounds cool... but why don't you get one of those really bright green pythons?" I told dad about the price and he shrugged and said "if we get two, they can breed down the track and you can pay me back." :shock::shock::shock:

Before I get too crazy excited, I have a few questions I'd love to have answered:

1. What class license are GTPs in Queensland (can we even keep them?)
2. If I want to breed down the track, do I need a special license to sell?
3. How much will a breeding pair of hatchling set me back this season? Is there a waiting list?
4. How old do they have to be to produce their first clutch?
5. Overall size?
6. Overall temperament and handling?
7. General keeping requirements? (temp, humidity etc)
8. Can a breeding pair be kept together?
9. How easy are they to breed/raise?

Any other general information and advice is greatly appreciated.

I know people don't like to admit they have GTPs, but if any GTP owners can contact me (via PM if you like) I'd love that. Also - if anybody selling them could PM I'd be more than happy...

Yes you can have GTP's in Queensland. Even on the basic licence, but only a maximum of two restricted. So two GTP's or two Woma's or one Woma one GTP. No special licence to sell, but if you are on a basic licence then you can't have any holdbacks :S

I dont know about snakes but after reading the Reptiles mag a couple of months ago about GTPs i dont think they are the easy to care for. Suggest you grab a copy of it, its Vol 3 Isse 6 with a big GTP on the front. Sorry i cant help more but its a suggestion

Phil have you read Reptiles Australia mag Chondro special?

The Doc wrote a surprising article about them and if you haven't read it I'd suggest you do before making any decisions.

I love the look of them, could not afford one in my current situation, but if I had the cash and A LOT of experience then I might go down that road one day.

Where do I get Reptiles Australia magazines from? (Particularly the GTP issue, obviously)

I understand they can be a tad harder to keep compared to a carpet. Do your research, and if you get one congratulations and don't tell anyone you can't trust.

I may be wrong but on a rec licence you can not breed them as you will have more than two, but you can always give them the "they lived together and somehow bred, i didn't even cool them" speech.

My understanding is that you can breed restricted reptiles on a rec license in QLD, so long as you don't hold back the progeny (that is, you continue to only keep two of them).

I would suggest reading the Reptiles aus mag too , had some very good points and included all the bad points too ..

As Nutta said "Keeping and breeding aus pythons" is a good read ( although it was "edited" by Swan ) it has soem very good info too .

hi phil i surgest you read the GTP reptiles aust mag, the more compleate chondro and the mike swan book, as well as any others you can get your hands on.

also if this is your first time breeding snakes i surgest you get a pair of something else for a season or two untill your happy that you can handle any problems with these

Yes that's just on the basic license. Unlimited unrestricted reptiles, maximum of 2 restricted (non-venomous) The next level up is unlimited.
