Just found this interesting piece of info...

Description
Water Pythons are large, robust snakes that grow to around two metres in length. They have plain dark brown or black scales on their backs, and have distinctive yellow bellies. These snakes are sometimes called Rainbow Pythons because of the rainbow sheen that sometimes appears on their scales. Like all pythons, these snakes are not venomous. They suffocate their prey by constriction.

Habitat
Water Pythons reside in the monsoonal belt across the top of the continent and parts of southern New Guinea. Despite their name, they do not live exclusively in water. They can be found in watercourses, swamps and billabongs close to forests or heavily wooded areas.

Diet
As opportunistic feeders, Water Pythons eat a variety of carnivore meals, including small mammals, water birds and even young crocodiles. In the Northern Territory their favourite food is the Dusky Rat, which is only found in Australia. Heat-sensing pits, located on their lips, help pythons to detect warm-blooded prey. Like all snakes, they also “smell” with their forked tongue, transferring the scent to an organ on the roof of their mouths.

Behaviour
This species is most active at night and they can often be seen moving across roads in an attempt to reach water. During the day they like to hide away in hollow logs, burrows and under vegetation. Water Pythons have a higher metabolism compared with other snakes and will often travel considerable distances during a night’s hunt.

Reproduction
Mating occurs during February-March or in June-September. Clutches of 6-23 leathery eggs are produced that the mothers try to keep warm by coiling around them. In the world of cold-blooded animals, this is almost unheard of.

Lifespan
Water Pythons live for between 10 and 25 years.

Threats & Conservation Status
The Water Python’s natural predators include crocodiles, feral cats, foxes and dingos. Many are also the victim of car accidents, run over as they cross roads at night in their search for food

Did anyone else know about the breeding in Feb/Mar????

I also found a link to an old thread about them. I love the enclosure Wrasse has done and would like something like this. I know people have varied views on this so I know I'll get alot of "yeah go on do it, would look awesome" and i'll get alot of "just keep it like you would your carpets".. I just want t know how you would keep heat in this type of enclosure with the water, would you heat the water as well?

I keep them and they have to be one of my favourite species to keep. Ive also experienced the infamous 'nastiness' that water pythons are known for but after a lot of handling they have all settled down into fantastic snakes that I completely trust with small children. They also seem to be very curious and always come over to see what Im doing when I open their enclosures. They are also the most food orientated species I have ever come across. Very under-rated species IMO.

Kaa Tom could you sent me the link to wrasses enclosure? I cant seem to find it. Thanks

2nd and 3rd pic of ur water python makes me want one love the yellow on them nice snakes matt

Water pythons are the best snakes, one of my fave pythons for sure, I love my pair.

Darwins are possibly the most horrible phase of water python. But i have recently learned that Katherines are extremely placid, don't poop or bite and don't seem to get quite as big.

SO if ur gonna get one get a Katherine not a top end phase.

These are my townsvilles bred by Sdaji, awesome snakes!

I can certaintly see why they are also called the rainbow serpent, those pictures are stunning Sdaji,do both species from Nt and QLD have yellow bellys.

Ive kept both QLD and NTs. differences ive noticed is colour mainly, as my NTs are placid as
except for feeding time and that is the same for the QLD they just love there food.

i dont know if anyone else has noticed but few years ago people were getting rid of waters for like 100-150 now i cee them for over 250
have they become more popular i would love to gett some

Ive got a hatchy pair from Snake Ranch.Feisty little things,They're growing fast and have settled in,So I guess its time to start handling them. Wish me luck. :)

i got one of this seasons waters from snake ranch as well... ( got it in jan) awesome little snake with an awesome temperament... has not even looked like striking since i tipped him out of the bag... and i just keep him the same as i did my coastals and spotted, the only difference is the poo cleanup.... simply awful and stinky

Nice snakes everyone!

KaaTom : Lucky little so and so.... If you got those where I think you got them, I had my eye on the female!! :)

Be sure to post plenty more pics once they are all settled in!

Water Pythons

I have a male water python that enjoys eating raw chicken wings as well as turkey necks. This diet reduces the costly bill of purchasing large quantities of frozen rats. Have any other members tried feeding their water python(s) on this diet. I intend to feed my water python on a medium mullet next.
