so even for this one you think a hook is a good investment? i dont think anyone really wants to handle him haha

my friends was the same mental. but after a couple of months he calmed to only biting getting him out then would cruise around no problems about 6 months after that he stopped biting altogether. food time is different strong feed response

Is that typical behaviour of a water python? I have heard a few owners talk about how their animals launch themselves out of the enclosures at them, or the python moves so fast when touched its enough to make one crap themselves. I housesat for a friend one time and cleaned up their enclosures for them. Come to Miss Water Python, reached in to pick her up (not knowing any better) and holy crap she startled amd jumped so damn quick I tried to throw my hand back out and cracked it on the edge of the glass door  poor girl, I scared her just as much.

Don't give up on him. Just learn his personality and respect him accordingly. Needs plenty of settling in to do and TLC.

Mate water pythons rock and let me congradulate you on buying what i think is one of the better species of pythons we have to offer. They are extremely curious and always wanting to know what is going on but are also increddibly cage defencive. If you have no fear then you have no worries. You may want to hook them out to avoid bites but i dont bother and both mine are 5foot plus. Once they are out they just cruise around checking out the scenery and looking awsome. I see them as underdogs not given enough of a chance and given a terrible reputation for no reason. They dont grow big and look awsome but since they get cage defencive and people get scared then they are branded psycho's, but once you get them out they are fine.

not going to get big? hes like 70cm from this years clutch haha and as thick as my yearling carpet haha

i am going to get a hook asap for him

All I can say is you bought it - now toughen up!!!
Water Pythons are somewhat hit and miss and I have met some cage protective mofos that you could get within a metre of there enclosure without them acting up... But remember that you have just purchased this wonderful animal and you should give it every chance to settle and give yourself every chance to learn about it's moods, mannerisms and the best way to handle it.... They are a stunning snake and I'm sure that if your willing will become a valued member of any collection....

well they dont grow huge. I can't see them getting to coastal carpet or olive size, i think their average size is a nice size for pythons.

so 6foot? around?

about 7 people have told me different thigns one said around the size of a olive other said around 9 foot. others have said carpet size etc.

internet said 2.5m

Not sure on others but my 10yo male is only around the 6ft mark my girls is around the same...

Mine dont strike out at the enclosure anymore as I send several hours in front of them daily so I guess you can say they are used to me being in their face. Buth they are definately very curious always coming out and wondering around.

Good luck with the little fella, your going to love this journey with him :D

Better approach Snake ranch ASAP. Don't leave it for weeks.
I think they would be understanding, however desease & quaruntine will probably be the biggest factor.
As previously stated, you have had the snake a day or so,like any python let it settle,Hopefully in a little time he will settle down, fingers crossed. The only problem SR will have is Quarantine, remember they do have a decent collection, and ONE little nasty could end up with a big disaster.Im getting a water python in a few days, lets hope its not Satana brother,LOL.I dont mind snakes with attitute thou, keep you on your toes....

Water pythons seem to settle down as they get bigger

I had two, both quite large. The male is friendly, but a messy pig as far as turning stuff over and rearranging his enclosure. The female was a ginormous COW! but really tidy and clean! I swapped her for a couple of "friendly" better-natured tassie tigers :p I'm happier for it! Hehe

i kept one for two and a half years... it never became friendly and would strike repeatedly whilst in its enclosure, but was sometimes alright once out for a while... another member on this site has her now.
funnily enough i did the same as moose and replaced her with a pair of friendlyish tigers.
the missus was happier to have more vens in the house and be rid of her.
good luck with it.

Give it time to settle down. When I got my first water python I could have sworn she was the spawn of satan! Would strike at everything as soon as I walked into the room and would try and bite my constantly, it took her a couple of months to settle in and id try and handle her for an hour or so a week after I let her settle in for about a month. She is now the most placid python I own and the one I trust the most to not bite me when I reach into her enclosure to pick her up.

One of the best python species Australia has to offer.
I was very disapointed that SR was sold out of them when I got there yesterday as I wanted to get another male.

a member on her has some water pythons and he said one thats pretty much full grown and he has to hook it out and straight into a tub to clean the enclosure. but his others a all good outside of the enclosures.

i think you'd have to listen to everyone else and let it settle for a week or 2 and the slowly start to handle it. and it might be better to get a hook to hook it out with so it doesn't stress as much

I have no experience with water pythons so don't reserve the right to comment on what they should/ shouldn't be like or how to correct the problem. One thing I do know is that Wildlife World in Sydney use a Water Python as there hands on snake! It is the most placid thing out putting up with being pushed at prodded at by kids etc. For this reason I always thought they were a well natured snake! Oh how wrong I was it seems!!
