Hey Guys,

I know for a fact you cant house BHP'S together but can you house Woma's together? Spotteds? Bredlis? Stimsons? Childrens?

Im just starting out and am wanting to research all breeds as i will be growing my collection yearly....

Any help is greatly appreciated...

i wouldn't house any snakes together. unless its breeding time. but it is usually safer just to keep them all separate. that way no one gets eaten!!

Yer thats true, i do know of pepole who have plenty of differet type in the one enclosure and never had a problem as long as they are the same size and they are seperated at feeding time, im just think of doing it as cheap as possibly and thinking of space wise in my house...

i have mine set up in plastic starmaid tubs (up to 50L size at the moment) and I have four tubs sitting on one heat cord. its a cheap and effective way to do it until i am able to finish building my enclosures.
obviously you can't house a full grown BHP or olive in one. but i have my two year old coastal, spotted, yearling BHP and olives in them.
there doesn't seem to be any problems yet, everyone is eating and shedding without fail.
so you'd be right for the first year or two of the snakes life depending on what sort you had

ps your friend is game. i wouldn't risk my much loved and kind of expensives snakes in one enclosure, no matter what size or species they were!

Yer tru, How do you have it on one heat cord? sorry i just am curious as i might look into this way as it seems effective (assuming otherwise you wouldnt do it lol)

i wouldnt keep anything together other than breeding season, you dont want to take the chance of something going wrong like a swallowed snake or a nasty bite

Ok thanks for the advice, just as Amy has said does anyone know any other methods for cost cutting? and how does plastic hold heat?

make plastic tubs are ok i prefer melamine or pine enclosures, melamine is cheap as chips

yer, i mad the mistake of buying a glass fish tank on site when i new i wanted a snake but i didnt research till i had my tank but when i got home and founs glass aint good i thought what can i do, so i built an MDF wooden box with an outlining of foam on the inside in order to hold the heat, i also divided my 4ft tank into 2 so i can house 2 hatchies, i already have 2 tubs which i was gonna feed them in but i could be using them for other snakes next year, it doesnt cost that much to build an enclosure from scrath does it?

the heat cord is about 5 meters? i don't know. and you can just run it along a table (i have mine curled around to make three rows) and then you can sit the tubs over the three lines of heat cord.

hmm that sounds confusing. i will try and get some pics up later if you like

Lol yes please amy, thanks for effort..........

Knights play tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are openly suggesting that you are trying to cut costs while establishing a herp collection experienced people who care about the hobby will be reluctant to help you. (not having a go at anyone who has responded. It is all sound advice) If you seriously want to cut costs and save some money don't buy animals its that simple.

If you want my advice, build on the husbandry skills you already have first. If you need to know if you can keep snakes together or not you probably aren't ready to maintain a large collection. When you are ready to build up a nice collection be smart and plan it out to minimalise your costs. Most importantly make sure you can provide for every animal you keep without skimping on the necessities like enclosures and proper heating.

Kind Regards.
Ewan.

Well said Ewan, there are cheaper ways to maintain a decent collection if you no what your doing. Also it cost around $250+ for a 4feet x 2feet x 2feet enclosure, built your own for around $50...With just about any hobby, there are ways to cut corners,BUT DONT let any animals suffer just to cut costs...IMO if you need to house 2 snakes together, besides breeding time, maybe try another hobby..Its a priveldge to own reptiles...

agree with above...... i winge all the time about the cost of my electricity bill but i love my reptiles so a quick vent and looking at my critters i don't care about the cost..... you must have passion

On another note ...the topic this is why you don't house them together....oh and by the way not mine it was on an older post :p

best not to do it. some snakes can be kept together, but theres allways a risk of it going wront and you ending up with hurt or dead snakes
