just wondering what your views are on wild caught reps being brought into the pet trade? i believe its wrong because the snake has had the freedom of being in the wild IMO. would love to hear other peoples views on this is it ok? what effect would it have on the snake???

Without wild caught reps this hobby would have never existed. It also introduces new bloodlines to the ones in the hobby. Keeps it fresh I guess you could say.

However, having said this I would prefer that specimens that are caught and kept are young, or just caught to breed and then be released. Not keen on the idea of older wild snakes going into captivity.

Bad effects i would think.wild caught animals,of any species, deserve to be where god put them.if all the wild animals were caught and put into private collections and zoos that would just stuff up an already broken eco system. We breed animals, snakes,in captivity for that reason,to keep as pets.mentally i think a wild snake would go crazy and become more and more dangerous.

I guess you don't want to have snakes as pets then because without people catching wild reps you wouldn't have any.

I'd say it highly depends on the species that is goin to be caught..
I mean it would be totally pointless catching coastals because there are heaps of em in captivity.
But if it was something not common in captivity or endangered I'd be for breedin them in captivity.

once the animal has experienced life and made it thru to adulthood in the great outdoors i think its wrong to keep them captive, tehyve made it thru teh vunerable period and they deserve their freedom.

i dont have a problem with getting a clutch of eggs out of a wild animal since the offspring wouldnt know any different, but mum should be released when its all over.

wild caught babies? well, the world is still a big scary place and only about 5% would probably survive thru to adulthood anyway, i have far less of a problem with them being made captives.

i dont like it... but in tas u sort of have too cause its illeagle to sell

u can swap but there arent many herpers around.

i have w/c but would rather captive bred :)

While I don't have any wild caught reps. in my collection at the moment I am for the legal collection of wild specimens under a quota system.

Things to take into account are that placing these species into the hands of private breeders and collectors will actually boost numbers of these animals in such a way that their wild relatives are unable to do because of diminishing habitat and various other factors.
Certainly the number of young actually living long enough to reach sexual maturity and procreating in captivity has to be markedly higher than in the wild.

I think that taking on board a wild caught specimen takes a lot of forethought and planning to ensure the animals quality of life given that it's own personal range and or territory would have quite large. So with saying that I feel that they are best placed in the hands of a true enthusiast who has the passion and the capacity to cater to their captive requirements.

For you all to say its ok to catch some, breed from them and then release after
reproducing them, Have a think about what the release may do to the other wild snakes, Eg what possible pathogens etc maybe released into a wild population.

As a keeper of a reasonable collection of legally WC adult animals i find theses arguments flawed as EVERY reptile any of you keep stemmed from WC animals.

thats like saying catching wolves and keeping them as pets is ok because all dogs are descendant from wild caught wolves

Without Wild caught reps we would have a very select range of herps to keep. Just think, NO Albino carpets, Roughies, hyper and albino blue tongues, no albino olives. The list goes on. Most of the stuff we keep or dream of keeping has originated from wild caught lines at some stage. Just my opinion.

i believe that catching to breed then release is probably a good thing if it doesnt cause to much stress on the animal

100% agree. Any ecologist will tell you that releasing ANY captive animal, CB or WC (in captivity for some time) into the wild is a fundamentally wrong and unacceptable practice. Introduction of pathogens is one thing but creating competition for space in already occupied niche, competition for food resources, etc., etc. is the main reason why release into the wild is prohibited.

this is also the reason i dont like the jag thing ,imagine if one was released into a wild population of carpet pythons??? ( if it has not already been done???).
hopefully they would not servive because they would cross a road get stressed by the on coming headlights and go around and around in a circle and get run over lol.
