By chance, I met a guy on the train home a few days ago. He showed me pics of him with corn snakes, retics and a boa!, at his mates place in Sydney (I knew it was sydney because he was standing in front of a car with yellow NSW plates).
Apparently he breeds them every year, and they sell like hotcakes?????.

Do these come up very often?

On Gumtree or Facebook I guess every month or so, somewhere in the country. It's mainly corns but you can occassionally see others. Who knows how many illegals are actually sold.

Probably more than they might considering the free advertising they receive here!

Is it safe to say you would get in more trouble for breeding/selling exotics than for keeping them? How hard does the law work to catch the people selling a single corn snake on gumtree, or do they not even bother?

They are on there every second day...Theres probably more corns being bred here in Aus then most of our native reptiles...

A guy was trying to sell a ball python morph for 2 grand on pet pages a while back idk if fake or not though

big call , doubt it very much
I used to no a few people that bred 50-100 every season, considering they can double clutch in one season, that ends up being qiuet a few..theres that many around Sydney its not funny, you can doubt it as much as you like,

So your saying there are more Aussie herpers break the law then follow it. I do not even live there and I know that's b.s. I can't tell you how many times I've got p.m's from people trying to call me out because I own exotics. It seems like there are a lot of Aussies out there who are against the illegal keeping of exotics. And rite fully so.

A couple of questions regarding this:
1: Did you ask to see these photos of this guy with boa's, rectics and other assorted exotics on his phone, or did he just casually show you this? I admit, I prefer to keep to myself on trains, planes and buses, however, being friendly is still ok... But showing randoms pictures? odd to say the least.

2: Is Sydney the only place in NSW that has NSW licence plates? I remember when I drove through Sydney I noticed a seriously large number of NSW licence plates and a hell of a lot less Qld ones... But when I was in Qld I noticed a hell of a lot of NSW licence plates and also only a few Qld plates... Seems they're everywhere....

3: In all my life I've actually never really purchased hotcakes.... Though, I've always thought of owning a hotcakes shop because apparently they sell like.... Ummmmm... Hotcakes...

Finally... Not in relation to your post.... Does the EPA or other agency call these gumtree adds? Or is it just too much work for them?

I can only imagine theres alot out there especially ppl without a reptile licence...Im NOT saying theres more Aussie herpers out there breaking the law, however theres ALOT of exotics being bred here,corns-milk-king snakes-red tailed boas and the list goes on.Theres also so many people who do-have owned them also..

There is no doubt in my mind there are a lot of exotics being bred over there, but you have to give your people more credit then that. In the short time I have been here I've been luckey enough to meet and chat with some stand up people. I've also had my run ins with dishonest and down rite rude people. For the most part I feel like a vast majority are against the keeping of exotics knowing how bad they can mess up an ecosystem.

Corn snakes have been bred and sold in huge numbers on the east coast that they are well and truly are out in the general public that have bought a pet snake for their kid and dont even realise its illegal or that there is any sort of license / permit system for keeping reptiles.... The Authorities do not advertise that there is any system to the broad community yet snakes are being sold all over the place, many people new to keeping reptiles slip through un aware that their new snake is an illegal exotic.... or they are rightly told not to worry about it, nothing will happen..

I saw that! And there were also a few adds for Ball Python hatchies in SA......I wonder if it just a joke or an illegal sale?
