DECCW has prepared a Draft Code of Practice for the Private Keeping of Reptiles (the Code) in partnership with an advisory group consisting of herpetologists, exhibitors and representatives of the major reptile societies. It establishes a set of minimum care requirements that will help to ensure the welfare of reptiles held in captivity. These requirements will apply to anyone who holds a licence to keep reptiles under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974.

You are invited to provide comments on the Code if you wish. A questionnaire has been prepared to assist you in providing comment. Should you decide to provide comment, your personal details will not be used for any other purpose and will be kept strictly confidential. Comments on the code will be reported anonymously and will not identify the submitter’s name or contact details.

Further information, including a copy of the Code, the questionnaire and contact details can be found on the DECCW website at DECC | Draft code of practice for the private keeping of reptiles

Additionally, a combined meeting of herpetological societies is being held on Wednesday, 11th November, 7pm in the conference room at Parramarra Leagues Club (13-15 O'Connell Street, Parramatta). The meeting will include a presentation and subsequent discussion concerning the Code. All are welcome to attend this free event.

APS users,

Thanks to all those NSW reptile keepers who have taken the time to read the draft Code of Practice and send in their comments via the online questionnaire. We have had a great response so far.

It is important to remember that nothing in the draft is ‘set in stone’. We are interested in the views of all keepers, so do not feel that you are unqualified to comment if you only have experience with one or two species.

Those keepers who have provided NPWS with their email addresses have been contacted directly, however this only represents a small proportion of the total number of keepers. Please help us to spread the word by mentioning the draft Code and the upcoming meeting at the Parramatta Leagues Club (7 pm on 11/11/09) to your reptile keeping friends.

APS Users,

This is just a reminder that comments on the NSW draft Code of Practice for the Private Keeping of Reptiles will be accepted up until the 18th of December. This means that people have 3 weeks to provide feedback.

DECCW is aiming for a Code which reflects the current housing and husbandry practices of reptile keepers. Your feedback will help to ensure that the Code is accurate, reasonable, achievable and a useful guide for new keepers.
