The zoology course is also available as distance learning and can be streamed to include a full module on reptiles now though i forget the company that is providing this.
Ignore the negativity you received but spend some years learning from not only others but from your animals and your mistakes. There is nothing wrong with having a dream but maybe not the best thing in the world to air it on a forum like this, keep your dream to yourself until you find someone you can trust and learn from.

Finally welcome to herping, our hobby needs passionate youngsters but dont be a typical Gen Y. When you ask a question think before you type and listen to the answer.

Thank you heaps. Will deffently take all of that into consideration :)

got to love school holidays..... the thing i find funny is the people answering to these threads are the same people that complain about them.

It's so funny reading introductions from people just realising their love of reptiles and everyone says 'Welcome, we are all happy to help and everyone is nice here bla bla bla....' Then a young guy asks a few questions and people try to crush his dreams and imply he's an idiot. Is it that hard to NOT be rude and sarcastic to someone who obviously has a genuine interest? I'm sure he knows there are better ways to actually make money, but really who wouldnt want to make money out of something they love...

There is a TAFE course run by Martin Fingland in Brisbane on basic care of reptiles. It used to run every half year but TAFE has been making some changes so I don't know when the next one will run. I believe there are similar courses in Melbourne and Sydney. The Brisbane one is a night course that runs for approximately 15hrs and gives a good basic understanding of what you need to look after snakes and other reptiles.
A course like that is something you could look into for right now.

For the future, i would do biology in grade 11/12 (and maths B wouldn't hurt). Then there are several different uni courses which would get you want you want. Not many universities actually have courses just on reptiles but most will include a bit on animal biology/zoology, although Cairns uni used to have a course called Australian Reptiles. The degree you do would depend on what side of things you are most interested in so you just need to look around at all the degrees offered at different universities (usually done through the QTAC website). There are also TAFE course on animal husbandry which you could do instead of uni, but it depends on your situation what is most suited to you.

basically it comes down to doing your research, there are heaps of options out there, you just need to know where to look.

+1. Though if you're really only interested in information relevant to breeding snakes, a full-blown biology degree is probably not for you. Though who knows, you might find that learning more about different animals actually broadens your interest!

My only comment would be; any idiot can learn to breed a snake. If you really want to learn about the animals you love you may wish to consider studying biology at university. Either way, best of luck!

type in google, ACS distance education and go into environmental courses, it has quite a few different subjects including herpetology, wildlife management, zoo keeping etc :) i plan on doing the herpetology course.

I am quite interested in this my-self now that you mention it. They are a bit expensive, around $750 for the herpetology one if i am looking in the right place.
If i were to enrol, would it give me a certificate saying i have completed the course etc, and would this help me in the near future to get a job in a field like this do you know? Thanks

yeh its $750 for the course. i think all u would get is a statement of attainment, i would assume that it would help towards getting a job in that area, not really sure what else u would need tho. volunteer work always helps with the practical side and experience. i hope to do volunteer work at the australian reptile park next year sometime.

Taronga Zoo Sydney also runs something in that area, can't remember well, but from memory it may be reptile keeper?!

Thanks Dan. Will check out those links right now :)

Aussie.

its not a course but another site u could look at for some understanding on genetics is vmsherp.com (sorry cant do links) its an american site but pretty much the same thing. Also Designer Serpents have a glossary of genetic terms and gives a breif description of each one like recessive, co-dom, heterozygous, homozygous etc. i would give that a look at, its quite useful :)
