what kind of snake is that whiteblaze??

yeah i handle mine everyday (minus 4 after feeding) and she has gotten better... Still a little psycho though =/

On of my hatchies feeding [just before], this guy deciding to drag it all over the enclosure then spat it out and finally then decided to eat it.. we won the battle in the end, it was his first pinkie :D so pleased

Do you handle them?

It would be interesting to somehow do a study to work out whether elapids in captivity envenomate food items, see if they know they are dead or not.

tassie tiger snake - yeah i do handle them, check out the pics on the profile to get an idea, beautiful snakes.. im currently doing my honors research on the genetics and ecology of this guys at uni :) so might be worth looking into that aswell

You could do a PhD and research stuff related to that :D

How long have you been keeping elapids for?

since i was 18.. and before that i had diamonds, costals and bhps on the mainland.. elapids are my interest, especially tigers.. and there is not much research down here in tas on our tiger snake, so thats what sparked me to research further into these guys.. :) they are beautiful to handle and iv never been a typical woman and played it safe, give them respect and know what the hell you are doing and if never had any issues.. yet i should say.

that would be a really interesting honors project =] did you uni offer an herp related courses? UQ doesnt offer any specialised courses =/

nar unfortunately.. .. im doing a bachelor of biotechnology and medical research.. stupid name i know.. its combined human, animal and plant biology... UTAS is kinda stupid lol

You're awesome :) With the small ones especially, do you drop them onto your hand with a hook? I'd hate to try and pick them up and spook it. One of my female pythons has the odd snap if you pick her up, the other two wouldn't dream of it. I'd not like to try and pick up a small one from the ground.

I lived in tassie for a few years, moved from Sydney. I'm glad I got away, lol.

My guy always seems to fall off his perch into the water bowl as he takes the rat out of my hand! I always worry about him drowning! Haha.. and he eats so slow!!
My albino does that off his 1.8m basking shelf , lunges at the rat , coils, then rolls off his perch for a big bomb dive into the water. I stress out and fish him out....

my baby tigers are pretty placid, some i can just pick up sometimes.. i have 2 that will climb on your hand the moment you open the tub.. others need a hook... it depends on how they react.. they are lovely little snakes though.. i miss my pythons.. it was heartbreaking when i had to sell them

Have you ever been tagged? I guess it would only take a split second to get bitten by a scared baby.

Isnt it great also watching them shed even better when there small and seing there patterns or colours change

i havent been tagged.... iv gotten used to keeping the babies, the moment you open the tub you can usually tell whether or not they are in a good mood, and there are some that crave to get out.. but in the end it only takes a split second and you are thinking "i just got bitten" there are risks in everything and i accept the consequences in what i do :) hasent failed me yet
