Not my stomping ground, but after looking at the books...
:idea: I'd say the locals up there are referring to Dendrelaphis punctulatus, which is black dorsally & has yellow flanks/ventrals in that part of Oz. There's a good example of this colour variation in "A Complete Guide to Reptiles of Australia" by Steve Wilson & Gerry Swan.
Just an educated guess.
