I'm getting into snake keeping, and this will be my first. I'm looking at getting a olive python hatchling...enclosure for the future no problem, but i was wondering if the olive would be ok as a first snake? and what do you feed them when they hit adulthood??

Olives grow into very big snakes, up to 4.5 to 5 metres. Are you ready for a snake that size in a few years time?

My suggestions for a first snake would be a spotted, stimsons or childrens.

I`d recommend a childrens or spotted as a first snake mate, one of the smaller species instead of the largest. Its up to the individual though...

i dont see a problem with having an olive as a first snake, as long as your ready to handle it when its full grown. and to answer your question about food, rabbits, or extra large rats!!

I don't think a small snake is necessarily the answer, but I must share this with you.... I have a pair of juvenile olives and they bite the crap out of me every time I open their cage. So unless you are willing to cop a few bites, I'd pick something a little more placid.

Having said that...... if the snake you purchase is a little older, then olives can be fantastic. Diamonds are very calm, and there are many species that tend to be more placid (than olives). Certainly be patient and read the responses of the experienced members on this site.

olives can be quite snappy, and because of their size, you know ALL about it when the bite. Bredli or one of the antaresia family is my suggestion.

well seeing as alot of people said that to me when i went to get my first snake but im happy with my olive and it seems fine atm im looking forward to the bigger size

yeah, I don't want a small snake like a childrens, but now reading a bit more as much as i love olives, i think something a bit smaller...any suggestions for something bigger than a childrens yet smaller than an olive...and not as snappy

I got a bredli today.. They are great. About 2metres or so fully grown, placid and they seem to be geat feeders.

I have two juvenile bredli, they bite me a bit. But the bloke I bought them from said that the others from the clutch are really quiet. Perhaps it's me. I love the Bredli and they quieten down pretty quick once handled so perhaps one of these may be the answer. They are truly a beautiful snake. Medium sized too.

there are a few 2 choose from,coastal,diamond,bredli,maybe a jungle,just 2 name a few,read other ppls opinions to see what they say,Cheers

bredli. FTW. nah, seriouse, they are awesome, im getting my first breli in a few weeks, lookin forward to it.

jungles are absolute stunners, but more of a look-but-don't-touch deal. BHP's (black headed pythons) are massive, but reasonably docile from what i know.

Mate if you wonna get an Olive for your first snake go for it as long as you can take care ove it when it get's really big.

id go water python they are a tad bitey as youngsters but most calm down by adult hood they get a fair size and have simple cage requirements
and you wont have many problems with them not feeding absolute pigs lol

some good medium size snakes are diamonds, bredlis, coastals, they are generally pretty placid it really depends on a animal to animal basis.
BHP's are great snakes, they can be very cage protective, but, once out they are a really great snake.

I also have two BHP and they are soooo placid. the male jumps out of his skin when first touched but never bites and my big girl (2.9m) is the quietest snake you'll ever come across. They eat alot though.
