I went to a pet shop the other day just to see what rediculace prices they had on there reptiles and was disgusted by the size of the enclosures, they were only just over the length of the lizards on the long side and were probebly half the length on the short side, the pythons had no branches and the hides were so small they couldnt hide in them which i realise is for display purposes. Are anyone else Annoyed when they see the neglect these animals suffer

thankfully the only pet shops that are allowed to sell them over here in WA (that i know of) have pretty good conditions for them

I can imagine how disgusted you were though - you should of said something. Can you report it?

i would like to but i dont no if you can, i dont see how they can house them like that, isnt anyone out there checking on them

You can say something. Any customer should express concerns if they think something doesn't look right. Otherwise as your National Parks Officer to take a check on them.

yeah i hate how you see 2 year old snakes that look like a hatchlings still. just want to save them but the condition they are in after that long and the price they have over them is the downer and is what stops me from saving them. it's real disapointing. i have however found a select few here in melb that do have healthy and fit looking reptiles. but it's only 3 atm out of the 8 i've checked out.... at least i would pay the price for thier animals unlike the other shops out there. i will only refer a few petshops but i always say to source out private breeders first.

I walk into and Aquarium store late last year that also has a small stock of reptiles, only to see a small diamond python that was 2 years + that looked about 6 mths old, it had been in the shop when they brought the place the Feb before, no hides, no branches and a small lid for water, so I thought I'd ask how much (boy I felt sorry for it) only to be told $750 and that was a bargin, sorry to say it's still there

They shouldn't be selling that diamond if it isn't eating, and obviously it isn't. I have one of my babies from last season back as he refused to eat for his owner. He took two feeds first up for me, but then stopped. He is no where as big as he should be. But we are working on him. That shop should not have a sale tag on the diamond.

I strongly disagree with everyone`s moaning about pet shop prices and have covered that in previous threads, so i won`t go into that again.:)
As for the condition and enclosures animals are kept in, I have seen shops keep animals in less than desirable conditions and i have seen some shops do it very well. If you feel that your local shops are not keeping the animals correctly then call the RSPCA, This is their job to make sure shops are doing it correctly. If you call them and voice your concern with how the animals are kept then they will send an inspector out to sort the problem.

The other day i was at a petshop and they had a Coastal advertised as a Hypo Bredli for $900, and the poor snake was so cramped up!!!! It could only just squeeze itself enough to coil in there!

That's ridiculous. Im stillg lad to hear that NSW is 100% reptile free in petshops:)
And, as good as it would be ti have rep's in petshops, I'm to afraid NSW will follow in other states' trends with horrific conditions. Grr.

Trust me when shops in NSW get reptiles the rules, guidelines and expectation to screw up will be so fierce that there will be no room for error. just watch NSW do it better than any other state (as we do with most things :D)

Tell them it's too small, I had my local pet store change their whole herp set up because I found the owner and expressed my concerns directly to her, and explained simple ways for her to fix the problem which in this case was heating and lighting.

I'm in canberra at the moment, there is a place that I visit every time I'm here just to see if it has improved and it hasn't. Most lizards have had bad rostral damage, all of the turtles are ematiated, the snakes are usually covered in mites, snakes water bowls are usually empty yet i've seen a few on here and a write up in a mag that say how wonderful the hole is.

The only pet shop I go to now, is Ipswich pet and Aquarium. They don't seem to have to many snakes for sale, only seen them there once and even then, they were housed correctly. They have hatchling beardies each in 1ft tanks.. Bluies in 2 ft enclosures, which the bluies are also quite young, I don't know alot about lizard houseing, but I would suspect that those enclosures are suitable. Other then that, its just all accesories.

I wen't to one pet shop, they had a two year old Stimsons in a cramped 20cm tub.. And had a few suitable enclosures around it that were empty.. I just don't get it. Its a bit like pets paradise and other pet shops, that sell dogs and cats, that are in a 2m by 2m enclosure with 5 other cats/dogs..
I think that only breeders should be aloud to sell Reptiles/Cats/Dogs..

Thats just my opinion.

More often than not it is usually the private breeders of cats and dogs that are the concern, By law dogs and cats have to be 8 weeks of age before sale, have to be microchipped and vaccinated. Less than 10% of private breeders abide by these laws and many of these people breed their animals to dangerous levels and keep them in less than desirable conditions.
At least with pet shops they are open to inspection 7 days a week for anyone to check on how they do things, with private breeders the appropriate authorities need to get search warrants that can take weeks to obtain and by then it is usually too late.

The pet store that sells reptiles that we usually go to up here is the Pet Superstore at Stafford, and I can happily say they keep their reps in great condition and enclosures that are good sizes, clean and very well set up! It's a pleasure to go and see their animals! (And no, I don't work for them or know the owners or anything-but I do think they deserve a good wrap!).
Sounds awful to hear some of the stuff you guys have seen!

i think that some just don't feed the pythons much at all and if they do it would be pinkies....
i feel the high price can be rediculous and will always be higher than most breeders but conideration needs to made in the fact they are holding something that is draining money, not much being a reptile but shops need to make a profit.... like one of my earlier threads i said i would buy some i recently found from a store as there beautiful animals and are all of health and size for thier age. so therefore are worth the price and my money if i had it. but as preference i source out private breeders if i can first

They must have figured a few things out.. Last time I was there, just about every animal was housed uncorrectly..
