I remember 5 years ago when albino hatchies were 5-6k and hets were 2-3k
I had a mate who bought 2 female hets and an albino male from one bloke for big $$$ and the male and 1 female het died within 6 months !
Hence the reason for albino to Het or Het to Het, comes down to dollars and cents !
This is my first season for Albino to Albino ( 2 clutches )
Also bred Albino to Het ( 4 clutches )
Both lines were bred this year ( blondie & phoenix )

Is there actually a DNA test that can be done to determine het?? Just hypothetically and definately not accusing anyone here of doing it but, Just say I wish to buy a pair of het Olives or het Ants which are obviously still highly priced. I go to a breeder that has several pairs of " Hets " maybe even an Albino x Het pairing and they have several different clutches how am i meant to tell for sure that my hets really come from an Albino x Het pairing which would give me 100% Het and not just a pair of possible Hets which could give me 2 totally non Het?? Surely if there was a DNA test available for say a couple of hundred dollars it would be well worth paying for to make sure you are getting what you are paying thousands of dollars for.

Hopefully what I typed makes sense to others as I just finished a 13 hour nightshift :)

It would make it so much easier!!! Like many aspects of science it comes down to how much money do you want to throw at it so that it can be developed. Currently there is no deffinitive test for reptiles. Ancestory can be given a probability if compared against DNA of parentage, and sex can be determined, but not really much beyond that from what I am aware.

I know I'm just giving him back some lip cause he did the same to me earlier on

Haha, it wasn't me correcting you? Anyway thanks for the help, and yes I did mean het. I think I am going to buy 2 hets and breed them, then raise up an Albino hatching and breed it to one of the hets. Is there any disadvantage to inbreeding snakes? I would do albino x het but working a part time job its hard to get the money together.

im 15 and just brought my first albino. im on $10 a hour so that snake is alot of hours :D i don't think they are any disadvantages of inbreeding as long as you dont go past a few generations. my Het and albino are from separate clutches.

Do you still live at home though liamb561? that makes things alot easier.. i just moved back with the folks to save for a house... oh how sweet it is.. lol its nice to have a stocked fridge.. you can get albinos for around the 500 mark now.. i wouldnt pay 800 for one..

To the OP, How is your project going?

Good on you Liamb , good to see 1 of our younger generation putting there head down , *** up , setting a goal and achieving it , very responsible for 15 bud...Cheers BigBrad

Hey JD,
The project is only just starting :)
I am in the process of buying a breeding pair of het albino darwins. I am planning on breeding them next year, hopefully keeping one of the albinos and putting it into future breeding projects. Ill be sure to keep you updated with theads as I go though.
Cheers, TM

Also does anyone else know about inbreeding snakes, just want a second opinion. I am planning on breeding 2 unrelated hets, then keeping an albino hatching and breeding it to one of its parents. Is that okay?

Thanks bigbrad

The cheapest iv seen a albino for is $650 personally if rather pay some extra cash and buy of a reputable breeder. Mine set me back $850. Wow $500 that's about $50 more then I paid for my het a few years back

Mine was a very reputable breeder, she is something a little different. no white just 3 shades of yellow. we also got a male from the same breeder but from a different line and he is a candy cane of white yellow white yellow. I love them so much.. she was my first carpet and ill keep her till the bitter end :)

It is fine to breed a parent to child. Reptiles are different to mammals you can inbreed them quite a bit with no abnormalities.

Okay here's my question:
If just 1 pair of distantly related albino's were bought for breeding, are they suitable to be bred with each other for the rest of their breeding years? do they need to be outcrossed at all even tho they are distantly related?

Anyone able to answer my question please? :)

Anyone able to answer my question please? :)

Take a look at your question....

if you buy 1 breeding pair to breed, can they breed for the rest of there breeding days?

Answer is: of course they would be... the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc... breeding would be no different to there 1st time! they would still only be producing gen 1 babies... if you wanted to breed gen2, gen 3 etc... you would need to breed there off-spring together etc...

in-breeding is very common in reptiles to try and prove out, enhance etc... the appearance of the off-spring... tho it is good practice after a few gens to out-cross every now and then.

I know they can breed for the rest of their breeding years, i just wasn't sure if using the same pair over and over would effect the babies in any way, im still learning the effects of inbreeding etc im very much aware of how genetics are proved, enhanced etc. Im sorry if my question was dumb but i had to ask it somewhere. I already knew the answer, i was just making sure it was the right answer and it was, thankyou for clearing that up, much appreciated. :)

Ok out of curiosity, does the same general rule apply for a caramel? I have a caramel coastal and I would also like to have a better understanding on the genetic tendencies of (I assume) the red gene.

How do you have a coastal carpet in WA?? i thought in WA you weren't allowed to have anything non native to that state?
