Hi good people of AuPython,

I have decided to get myself a Jungle Carpet Python as my first snake.
Do you guys have any advice for me to choose a real nice one as a hatchling/yearling? (Dark black and bright yellow)

Regards,
GC

Dont ask if people are selling here, your account might get banned. you need to suscribe to post in WANTED section. its not much though

i acutally get my first snake next week its a childrens python its about 3 months old. i got a hatchling so i could tame it from when it was small

ah, thank you! i edited my post.. hope its okay now :)
Cheers mate.

If the seller you find is local, see if you can handle it because jungles have a (sometimes unfair) reputation for being nasty. If it is a bit nasty dont worry because a lot of little ones are. They usually grow out of it. If you decide to get a yearling make sure it's a nice handler/temperament as they are harder to calm down when older. (and i'm guessing with a first snake you want something you can handle or at least not be scared off)

i will definitely try to handle them before purchasing. how about color wise though?

with jungles as they are hatchlings there colours are dull but if you want an understanding of how it would look as it grew older ask the breeder if you can have a look at parents of the python

how about what they say about different lineage? do they differ in color and patterns?

Most breeders won't let u see any of there collection but will send pics of the adults or last yrs hatchies so u know what to expect regarding how its going to turn out in the colour stakes....Jungles r not always the best first snake but each to there own.... Mine does not bite but still requires some form of experience to handle... Good luck with your purchase

thanks heaps buddy. as long as the breeders are reputable and trustworthy. i dont see why i shouldnt be trusting their words :) I have thought this through, im going to bite the bullet. it is either woma or jungles, but everyone's asking me to go for the fiercer looking one! :p

Do you always do what other folks tell you to?

Have a look around and see what you really like. I know some folks who had their hearts set on BHPs and Jungles who took one look at a wheatbelt Stimson and fell in love. If you are certain you want a jungle, then go for it.

Not only do Jungles look "fiercer" they really can be fiercer. not all jungles are snappy, but they are renowned for being one of the snappier snakes, and not all grow out of it.

Are you getting a snake for yourself or everyone else? it has to be what you want.

Imo it was a good decision on a Jungle. They are beautiful creatures and are so cool to watch their colours develope into bright yellow with jet black sadddles. Yes, some are nippy. If you are buying local handle all the snakes they have and one might choose you. You never know ;) My jungle was never snappy but seriously if you are getting a hatchling the bite doesn't even break skin. Should grow out of it with a few months of handling. :D If you want a Jungle get a jungle but if you think you want a Jungle but can't go past the woma get a woma. Unless you want two snakes...then get both!

I agree with Sezzzzzzzzz, choose the snake that you love because you have to live with him/her. Don't pick one just to impress some friends (I know you're not doing that though:))

You'll be sharing this guy's comapionship for another 15-20+years. Choose wisely :D

PFFFT i wish someone would tell my 4ft jungle, George that. the minute he sees me near his enclosure hes in strike mode. I have watched him bite my husband so many times that he couldnt be bothered closing his mouth. Sure they aren't all like this, but its something you need to think about before buying a hatchy that then grows into a big snake, with a big mouth, who likes to bite. What would you do if that happens. (all snakes bite, yes, but some more than others.)

well said Sharky.

Not only does it have to be what you want, it really needs to be something you can manage. If you get one and and it's a psycho animal that strikes the glass when you come close or continuously tags you, you are going to be a bit nervous about getting it out again and again so it calms down. (unless you decide to not handle it anymore.)

I don't mean to scare you away from jungles as they are beautiful snakes and most will calm down with regular handling, however it is something to think about. It will be your first snake and it will be the snake that builds you confidence in the hobby. (unless you are entirely confident with keeping and handling snakes) So don't get it just because it looks cooler. You will regret it if you get a nasty snake. Go into a shop (even if you are purchasing off a breeder) and handle some snakes. Usually one will choose you or you will fall in love with one. Don't go in with your heart set only on a jungle. Be open and you may find your snake or at least the type of snake you want.

Oh and there's the 6 month rule too so if you absolutely hate the snake you can't do a slytherin  sorry couldn't help it.
Meaning you can't ditch it until it's been in your care for 6 months.

you nailed it there BP!! this is exactly what happened with George. And i'm not too proud to say that even after being warned about jungles temperamental ways, i still went ahead and got him.

OP- i also have a woma, and people always ask if he is a ven cos he looks different from a carpet (obviously). i would highly recommend a woma for a beginner snake. They have tons more character too!

I'm pretty set on a jungle and am looking forward to the challenge in handling them and hopefully calming them down. I never knew about the 6 months "rule" but I wwill most definitely give it at least 6 months before giving up on him if he's too nippy.
my ppurpose of the thread was actually to learn how to choose a nice black and gold jungle as a hatchling. Like which lineage/breeder etc.

I decided many moons past that the next snake to add to my collection had to be a Jungle.

After being bitten a dozen times by snappy little hatchies I can now say that I am the very proud owner of a loverly Bredli.

Still do not own a Jungle, and looking at a Woma for next addition.

One other thing as a new person you might not be aware of the adictive nature of keeping reptiles. So think of this as your first snake. There is a good chance that several others snakes will soon be collected.

I know southern cross reptiles has excellent jungles. The local breeder I get my snakes from has gorgeous jungles...pm me if you want his details.
