maybe for the ignorant (like me) you could give us a few tips on things that we should be looking for and ways to help prevent this (things like replace wires after X amount of years etc
Please everyone check your wiring particularly your power boards. Partially plugged in plugs are very dangerous

Burnt wires, hardened/brittle insulation, exposed wired etc.
While I understand the need to be cautious with wiring etc. I don't think people should be jumping to conclusions or making any subtle suggestions about Alex's situation without finding out all of the info. I was led to believe that it was most likely the house wiring and not the enclosures. Consider that most houses in North Sydney are pretty old and the wiring in them was likely never installed to expect a couple of kW running through them, it's a situation that almost nobody could predict.

That's good info, Snowman.
Let's say the smoke alarm you've so prudently installed in your reptile room goes off one day. You check it out and see smoke coming from one of the enclosures, probably the result of an electrical fault. Obviously, if the fire is too big the best advice is to abandon ship, but if it's only small, what is the safest way to attempt to put it out?

As Wally76 stated use a Dry powder extinguisher, or a CO2 extinguisher.
