I had a lady in a petshop tell me I needed a 250W globe for a 60X60X90 Diamond tank....she seemed very knowledgable too but I didn't go with her on this one!

I was just saying to my boss the other day that we should have to sit a test before being issued an assistants licence, you need a police check but you don't need to prove you are capable of actually doing the job.

That is ridiculous, I don't sell that high wattage for anything let alone a Diamond. I don't even thinkl we sell 250W globes. Come to our shop next time, your close enough and I am always happy to meet APS people.

I actually walked straight out of the shop and went and purchased a 50W from Herp Shop! Haven't had any problems, it's heating perfectly. Luckily for her I wasn't stupid enough to try and cook my snake. Just couldn't believe the advice I was being given!

from working in a few petshops in my time and now at a pet supply shop!(we dont sell animals so not a pet shop)
people will tell you any thing to bump up the sale! Me personally dont! i was tought if you dont know dont say any thing and i tend to give people other options which most of the time are alot cheaper for them! i have a few customers who come in to see me for my advice on reptiles, birds etc from my own personal experience! i always explain that im not a vet and cant diagnose ur animals! which people think any one who works with or for animals know every thing!

I live on the sunshine coast and I'd have to admit, every pet shop I go into I've never had bad advice or anything. I must be lucky

Sounds like all the self proclaimed experts on this forum

Wow....that is just rediculous, only take that advice if you want your snake cooked alive.
Glad you didnt take the advice.

We keep a copy of every reptile/fish/amphibian etc book we sell as a shop reference copy and I own most of the herp ones, if I don't know I check a book or ring a breeder I know specialises or even the reptile vet here who is always happy to help out if he can via phone. Everyone that buys an animal off us receives his details and I have even given some people my phone number, lol. My problem, if you want to see it as a problem, is I treat all the animals like they are mine until they go so many people who are not ready or who I think reptiles are not right for leave empty handed. It is how it should be, as animal custodians we are responsible for their welfare and if we want to have these jobs it should be more than about wanting to play with cute animals all day.

That is horrible mate. Pet shops are like this

I told her specifically it was for a Diamond Python too! I would have been willing to spend whatever it cost to purchase the wiring and emitters and cages from the shop so I could get it ASAP but I'm not comfortable buying from someone who's trying to kill my babies through ignorance.

Oops wrong person I was thinking of, nevermind

Not all petshops give bad advice. As someone who is the reptile expert at my workplace I kinda take offence to that. Please don't bundle us all into one, some of us do know what we are doing.

No offence as a lot of young people are very experienced, but I don't think many people of any age could be called reptile experts and I cringe a little when my workmates refer to me as one, but even fewer 18 year olds would be knowledgeable enough to be given such a hefty title.

Compared to the knowledge of the people who I work with I am the expert of the store on reptiles. I'm not saying I am a reptile expert just the most knowledgeable person in the store I work in :) Sorry for the confusion.

Hey it is all good, my boss makes me write reptile expert on work experience reports and I hate it. For example, I have been keeping for a lot of years but have not bred yet, although I have successfully bred the BHP's at work to the point where the female has just had her prelay shed, so I am only semi knowledgeable in that regard.

Im currently working in a petshop that sells Dolittle mice and i can tell you that employees get pretty much no reptile training whatsoever.. A shame really considering the huge increase in reptile popularity nowadays.. it just means im always the one getting asked about reptile stuff which i'd rather over someone getting the wrong advice anyway at least.

same situation as you too MyMitchie apparently.

Asked my mum to grab some weaner rats while i was at work,
Recieved a phone call from her shortly after saying she had just left the shops with hopper mice. Apparantly the employee told her that it is wrong to feed your python anything bigger then its head and also that anything under 2 years of age should still be on mice.

Very very frustrating, after feeding 3 hoppers to my coastal she still dosnt seem satisfied lol

hahahahahahahahahhahhaha that sounds right

Friday I was told that a 16w heat mat will not only kill my snake but burn my house down aswell even after I explained that it would be connected to a thermostat and have a spacer between the mat and enclosure. I was then told that a click clack was not suitable for an 8 month jungle and that if I must use it then use a heat lamp.
