As far as we know it has no meaning and was made up by the author because he thought it sounded good. Thus me saying I was being nasty.

Okay, Andro is male or stamen. Not quite sure about the pogon part. It does remind me of of the "gon" in polygon, et cetera - not sure if that has anything to do with it. Gayanus - well, if people started talking about the gayanus grass rather than the Gamba grass, I think there'd be a lot more interest generated. I'm not sure what that means either. It could be based on a name - Gayan, for example - but trying to look it up is fraught with risk. :p
