Just a quick question about absorbtion through skin, i have seen these 'spot-on' vitamins and minerals and they claim to be absorbed into the skin. Does anyone know if this is true? I know the liquid is thicker than water if that helps at all.

I'm glad the beardie is doing well now :)

Hey Em! :)

As far as the vitamin intake is concerned, if it's "urgent", I'd suggest sub-cutaneous injection, just under the skin. Otherwise, orally is the best bet - on or in their foods. Again, vitamin and mineral supplementation is only necessary if the diet is inadequate... Personally, I wouldn't waste my money on those "spot-on" supplements...

Hope this helps!

Best,
Carolyn

He is all well now, they consulted a reptile biologist who told them to give him shallow baths in a 50/50 mixture of pedialite electrolytics and water twice a day. This will flush his system and rehydrate him....interesting, apparently it gets absorbed through his skin and vents..

Interesting that they suggested that
Very similar to Powerade
Excellent cure all for reptiles

Sad news, they put a lock on the enclosure, then lost the key and removed the lock. The girl got in again and squeezed him till he bled from his nose and mouth. He died shortly after, everyone is very upset.

:( that is soooo sad, i can't believe they didn't keep a better eye on their daughter after what happened before.
Such a sad ending!

Agree with you Em....I've just had my 4yo grandson stay, he was so gentle patting and kissing my beardies, he knows to be careful as they feel pain like us. I'll have to post some pics he took of them with his own camera when I get them...much better than what I take with my phone )

Oh man, I'm so sorry... Poor little thing... I guess the little girl may have just been trying to "hug" him...?

Please pass on my condolensces to your friends...

*bug hugs* to all!

Carolyn

I only hope that when i get my beardies that my 2 1/2 year old daughter is as nice and gentle with them as your grandson was :)
Their enclosures will be locked and the keys put up and my daughter will be taught to be gentle with them. I would hate for this to happen to the ones i am getting :(
I would love to see the photos too!

That's both bad parenting *and* bad animal husbandry. I hope they don't get more animals. I see a *lot* of kids in my work, and it is possible to discipline them so they don't kill animals, especially considering what she did to it the first time. I'm guessing they won't learn though.:(

Poor lizard....it'll probably never be the same around the that child after it's nasty shock.

Good thing beardies are indestructible.

ah... ianinoz, you need to read the whole thread... :/

This has to be one of the most tragic things I've ever read on APS. They were so lucky the first time. To let it happen again, with such awful consequences... I have no words, at least none that I'm allowed to say here. All my sympathies go to the poor beardie. What he must have experienced at the end of his life doesn't bear thinking about.

sorry edit not through skin just absorbed through vent.

Okay, so where's MY apology...?

I did...! Openly, I hasten to add, at post #36!

"Okay, firstly, I apologise - I got part of my post incorrect.

Elaborating on this, bearded dragons do not have the biological capacity to absorb water through their skin/scales (frogs absorb water through their skin). HOWEVER, and this is where my information is wrong, so I'm correcting it - they CAN absorb a "little amount through the cells in the cloaca". (from a specialised reptile vet, and also a biology professor)

So, in a nutshell, I apologise for the incorrect information I gave, and for upsetting those concerned. Hopefully now I've rectified this to a suitable degree! :)

Best,
Carolyn"

Fair call

That'll teach me to read the entire thread.

I hope the dragon was given a nice send off. :(

I'll have keep a close eye on my grandson when he gets mobile and if Lizzy is brave enough to come out when he's here.I'd hate for that to happen to Lizzy.
At least Lizzy has the opportunity to run away if a monster-child is after her and she's got plenty very tight crawl spaces she can excape too very quickly that she hide in, she's not being imprisoned in an enclosure.
