After reading the thread: "sale of reptiles in NSW petshops" I would like to know peoples thoughts on herps in petshops (any state)
I know its not this simple but here goes...

RE: Reptiles in Petshops!!!

i reckon only basic need herps should be for sale in pet shop like easy starter ones and they should come with a full care sheet and the people in the pet shops should have a clue what their talking about and selling

my 2cents, if this was an option in poll i would vote for it lol, im still yet to read the other thread though

That question is to broad jordo, i believe a very limited number of stores should be allowed to, and that they should be very heavily regulated with laws strictly enforced. But in general, no i don't believe pet stores should be allowed to sell reptiles.

i think only a few shops should be able to sell reptiles and they should have very strict licences and must be made to know everything about the animal they are selling and only allowed to sell a couple of diffrent breeds. ive been to pet shops in melb and the staff couldnt help me. but on the other hand i have been to others that knew their stuff.

Just ask WA people about reptiles in petshops.

Its insane and STUPID! You cannot expect people who own/run petstores (let alone 15 yr old kid staff who seem to populate pet stores) to know everything about every type of animal they sell. It puts a burden of responsibility on pet stores which I personally don't believe they are equipped to handle. You can 'teach' people out of books- but book smarts only get you so far. You need personal experience to be able to offer good, sound advice regarding the lifelong care of any animal- let alone reptiles.

I think its a dumb idea. If a store deals solely with reptiles- I believe they are more likely to be knowledgable and offer the RIGHT information. That is of course IMHO, and IME.

Marie.

there should be more poll options... its like HUMANITY. there are good and bad in all races. you can't stereotype the pet-store industry into good, bad&dunno! I have seen terrible pet stores, and great ones! I have seen awful conditions in private captivity too (many times), but most pet owners do the right thing. (i HOPE!) IMO each individual store should be legally accountable for the condition of their animals.

I agree with everyone so far :D
That question is to broad jordo
Yeah I know but I just wanted a general answer. I'm surprised at the results so far, i though there would be more no's.

i'd love to be able to go to petshops to view / maybe buy reptiles but seriously some petshops in qld who have them there just have no idea, they have them to make money and thats it. i voted no based on experiance dealing with petshops. but in saying that some petshops i have seen that have been run by reptile enthusiasts are just awesome to look @ and offer great information to the up and coming young guns. just my 2 cents lol

do we really have to do this again think this topic is a bit floged out
sorry just my opinion

I think they should be allowed to sell them but should be a few strict conditions to selling them like

-Staff who know all about reptiles.Maybe only let people over 19 apply for the position.
-Have NPWS do suprise drop in visits where they will check the conditions of the reptiles and not let the fact that they are NPWS be known. If everything is not in order then the shop gets a fine.
-Have a "Reservation" period where the store holds the reptile for a week so there are less impulse buys. In that time you should have to fill out a questionaire with randomly selected questions off a database for that specific animal, You then need to get say 90% of the questions right to obtain the reptile.
-Indepth care sheet and support from the shop if anything should turn sour

where is the - yes, but only mungrel hybrids option
Im am against anyone selling reptiles for money, they should be free, or better yet you could pay me to take them

-Staff who know all about reptiles.Maybe only let people over 19 apply for the position.
yes no one under that age could possibly know how to look after herps
I agree with the rest of what you said :)

I think its far more important to monitor how petshops look after their animals than it is to restrict what they can sell.

aquariums?? yes.reptile specialists?/ yes...petshops generally?? no

If it had to happen, Im inclined to agree with ssssnakeman. With emphasis on the "specialist" part. They need to have extensive experience and knowledge.

I know some threads can become repetative, but it can be a good idea to have fresh debate over serious issues such as this one.

general pet shops (cats dogs) i personally dont think so

also i think if they do sell reptiles i rekon say at a minimum once a month/fortnight they should have someone come in without warning just to do a check up on the reptiles

also agree with having a week ummm cool down period so its not on impulse and with the questionair thingo

but they can take it home and do it because that way they can do some research and may learn even more rather than just answering questions

No I wouldn't like to see that. I can see far more problems created by shoddy pet shops and impulse buyers.
Matter of fact I believe the NPWS RKL's are issued far too leniently as well.

No, I'm deadset against it.

Impulse buying? The general public can't impulse buy, because they won't have a license. By the time they get that license, hopefully, that will act as a cooling-off period.

:p

No I dont think just any pet shop should be allowed to sell reptiles but maybe there should be some more specialist shops around for people who are taking an interest in reptiles and need information and help.
