Hey just wondering how many people have python setups without using thermostats? and how you do it? weather it'd be basic tubs to full enclosure setups..

I don't use any thermostats. It's pretty simple really. I get or make an enclosure, any enclosure and don't put a thermostat on. ;)

my diamond pythons run on no thermostats
just on timers.
during summer months they are given 4hrs of basking time and 8hrs of UV time
during winter for cooling the hours of basking lights drop down to 2 and UV time drops to 2 as well with the odd week of no uv & no basking
seems to work fine

leighroy is 2-4hrs per day enough for adult carpets?

how many watts are the bulbs?

I just wanna setup a simple neat setup.

haha..easy for you mate! cause its freakn hot up your way! all you 'd need would be a box and maybe a fan. lol

1-2hrs is in the cooling/winter time
4hrs is summer time and combined with the heat from the uv they seem to do fine
they eat and digest in proper time, and they are always basking

Remember though that he is talking about diamond pythons which are a cold climate snake and dont require as much heat as other python species and seem to thrive in colder conditions with limited basking times.

I didn't use a thermostat on my first plastic enclosure due to some advice I was given. The heat mat melted a hole in the bottom of the enclosure! I was lucky a) the snake wasn't injured, b) it didn't start a fire (aspen substrate), & c) the snake didn't escape. I have since deleted that advice from my memory banks & followed the manufacturer's instructions & had no probs since (now use Microclimate Ministat 100). Check pic.

the setup is going to be for a bredli python. ?

very lucky. I'm just askin cause I read somewhere on a thread cant remember which now, people saying they dont use thermostats because they can fail, so they setup deferently without and just wanna know whats a good way to do this, as I have a had a recent thermostat fail. They are good but thought if I can go without it would be better.

I have lizards and i dont use thermostats, i just judge how much wattage i would need to keep it at the most reasonable tempreture its pretty easy all you need to do is make sure its not too hot!

My plastic enclosure is for a young Bredli (got a 2nd one since, can't resist em!)

I guess anything can fail at some stage, but I'd bet there are a helluva lot more working thermostats out there than malfunctioning ones. I was only using a 13W heatmat, but being on all the time, & still getting some 30C+ days back in March must have been enough to do the damage. At the end of the day I guess it's always going to be your own personal choice, & personally, I'm all for 'em.

This is the problem with people giving advise with out explaining them selves properly

You can do the no thermostat way but do it right have a search for a thread by Trueblue on his set ups he dose not you them and swears by his set up

Bredli can handle very low temps. There home range gets as low as 10 degrees during the day and below freezing at night.

You're not wrong! My male especially loves sitting up in his branch off the floor at night, it's getting down to 15C-ish at night in the room (ambient air temp) & he doesn't mind some time away from the heat. (for the record, floor temp at the warm end is 30-31C). My female Bredli, like my wife, likes spending a lot of time curled up in the warmth sleeping ;)
