Fair enough boys.

He does cop a bad wrap on here everynow and then though, which is unwarranted. But yes I know of Henrys woma he is pumping lol.
Could you describe the meatods he is using eg food size, time bettween feeds heat used ect.
As this was why I started this thread and after 4 pages I still don't know, any help greatly appreciated.

From what I know.

Feeding is every 4 days at most. More than this he has seen negative effects to the snake.

Heat is normal heat for the species being fed.

Food size is increased quickly, like a few feeds on each size etc. But this all depends on what species.

Also he uses a bird oil or something which gives them a helping hand too. Not sure what it actually is, Simone might be able to let you know.

i feed my snakes up big for the first year, then cut them down the next, ive never had pin heads so im not changing how i do things

It is Mutton Bird Oil Pugsly.

As Codered and Hazzard have already said, Skaarfing is not having a go at Shane at all, he is a well known keeper and has been successfully breeding them for many years.

Too many people believe that power feeding is bad, but don't really understand the term. Some believe if you feed an animal a meal a week it is over feeding them. Like those that say 'only feed after they craap', and only feed every 3 or 4 weeks. Feeding every 3 or 4 weeks may be fine for some adults, all dependant on the food size. However, the term Skaarfing is in direct relation to hatchling/juvenile snakes, not adults. You can feed them or 'Skaarf' them while they are young and they jujst grow, there is no proven scientific evidence that proves it is detrimental to there health, if there is, I would like to see it. So a certain University is undergoing such a study over a 3 year period to see what the effects are of A) not Skaarfing, B) Feeding "normally" and C) Skaarfing.

So Skaarfing means to feed your snake every 3,4 or 5 days a large meal, that being like 30% of body weight as a rough estimate. Not like people who have a 18 month old maccie that is still eating pink rats and is being fed one a month and getting 2% of body weight.

Hope that helps a little.

Cheers
Daz

You may very well be correct Code Red and others....
It's however not uncommon for that those that power feed; to be often slammed for practice's.
I myself used to be against it; in regards to the raising of pythons....i've since seen the results of methods that have been used for a number of years overseas;and in Australia; by keepers; such as Shane....
Needless to say; if carried out correctly; some amazing results have; and can be achieved.
I really need to stop making posts late at night.... ;)

Very interesting read, most more enlightened keepers seem happy to accept these mthods if used correctly. I myself get attacked on here for using this method, I have used the method and seen it used by others for long enough to know it works. As Indicus says their doesn't appear to be any evidence to back the idea it affects the long term health of a snake.

I'm ashamed to say this in public... but ... who is Shane Skarff?
Where is he and where can I read about him?
Thanks! :D

theres probably a stack of people on here that fit that profile Daz

It amazes me when I see a post about some poor python that is 9-12 months old and still being fed a pinky mouse per meal once a fortnight  No wonder they end up eating the Breeders Choice.

Shane Skarff is a very well known and respected breeder from Sydney's western suburbs.

He run's Shane's Aussie Pythons and posts on APS under that name

wow, it doesnt sound as bad as i originally thought. if it works and doesnt hurt the snake whats wrong with it? if the snake suffered anything from it it wouldnt breed?

i couldnt agree more
i expect critism for this but hey, theres always one.
i never feed anything pinkie mice. even my youngens get fuzzies, although pinky rats are much bigger than pinky mice.
we feed our 6 month old maccies sub adult to adult mice and always have. one big feed is so much better than a few little ones imo. our yearling coastals get 400gm rats which they have no troubles getting down

is there a definition of whats considered scaarfing.

basically i wanna know if im doing it...

i have an 8 month old stimsoni that i feed 2 pinkies a week (only because i havent ran out of them to get fuzzies)

is this too much? and will 1 or 2 fuzzies be recommended? i'll be switching next week.

here's a pic of my stimms, hatched mid Jan. Do what you feel is best. I personally like to get all my reptile up to size asap.
